Info from 500 S+W Handi rifle shooters needed
« on: December 20, 2012, 05:48:15 PM »
I'm thinking about putting together a 500 S+W Buffalo Classic with a 22" barrel. Good Idea or Bad ??? I'm thinking that would be as the Kid's say "SWEEEET" or is it "SICK" Only problem I can see is availability of decent bullets I don't need any 500gr solids, there are no Elephants or Cape Buffalo in the neighborhood. Some soft point 275 or 300 gr. would be nice. What do you think ?

It'lll look nice, but if you plan on shooting full pressure loads, you should think twice about the steel butt on the BC stock, it can be a killer on any rifle with much recoil, even with hot loads in the 45 Colt BC Carbine it's not exactly "comfortable" to shoot much from the bench, the BC stock on a 500S&W wouldn't be my first choice for shooting comfort.

Steel buttplate + 500 S&W = Ouch!
I got my 500 SW just in case the circus came to town and a few of those pesky elephants escaped and decided to trash my yard.  ;)

I fired 1 round through one of those things once. It was a painfull experance, I would reather shoot a box of ammo through my handgun at 1 time than fire 1 round through the Handy rifle.

For lighter bullets I use 300 gr Hornady FTX's and they do pretty well. I'll probably try Barnes 275 gr xpb's next and see. Nice thing is, even with the low weight you still have a sh*t-ton of stopping power. It's about perfect for me for whitetail in Indiana but I'm not sure I would go through the effort just for a range gun.

I have a shorty 50-70 BC carbine and I shoot 450 grain cast over a very wimpy charge of Unique.  Anything over about 1,100 FPS and the steel buttplate starts to bite my shoulder.  This gun looks very cool but it is definitely a case of form over function.

You can have your cake and eat it too by adding a recoil pad to the BC stock, either a nice leather slip-on or cut and fit a pad.

Try the Lee minnie ball and about 10 gr of Unique, it would be fine.

Tim, Love that 45-70. Can you tell me more about it.  What did you all do to it. I'm going to have one much like that only with a lace on leather butt cover.

I just added a Firesight w/shorty ramp and a WGRS peep, same barrel and frame that's in the FAQs Peep and Firesights link, I just swapped the stock set after Gardner broke the stock during a barrel fitting(which they promptly replaced when I sent em a pic  ;D), I just cut the bad part off and fitted a Limbsaver grind-to-fit pad to it so I could use it. The 22" 45-70 barrel looks better with the carbine forend to me than the longer 45-70 BC forend, but they're hard to find since they're discontinued.

What model did that rifle start out in life as ?  I was thinking you reshaped a regular pallet stock. How much longer is the  BC forend compared to the BC Carbine ?

The barrel was bought as a used barrel from the H&R classifieds here on GBO many years ago, it's just a standard ejector 22" barrel, standard palletwood stocks are beech or birch, the BC stock is walnut. I don't remember the specific forend lengths which are listed in the FAQs, seems to me it's about 3" difference.

I would like to put a rifle like that in my collection. Do the factory drilled scope mount holes fit a standard peep sight ?

black lab,
Williams makes a peep sights that fits the rear two holes scope rail hole a Factory D/T handi barrel.  The pic of Quick's BC 45-70 carbine has that peep sight.  Quick's peep on the 45-120 is a frame mount and probably had to be d/t to install.  Take some time to read through the FAQs sticky thread at the top of this forum.  Control F (to search) is your friend.  The info in the FAQs will keep you from trying to reinvent the wheel.

Good Luck

The peep sight on the 45-120 BC is the Williams FP-TK, it mounts in the rear two scope base mount holes just like the WGRS on the 45-70 or any other modern H&R, both of these and other peep sights are covered in the FAQs Peep and Firesights topic.  ;)
