forensic Psychiatrist gives reasons for mass killings
« on: December 17, 2012, 06:00:36 AM »
I watched the view this morning because I heard this guy was on. His expert opinion for mass killings is,1.it's not caused by mental illness. 2. it's not caused by access to guns. His reason in a nut shell is because we have had both mental illness in this country for hundreds of years and this mass killing craze is only about 20 years old. According to him- the reasons for mass killings are 1. desensitized due to violent video games { the more the player kills, the more points the player gets} and 2. becoming a celebrity which is larger than life. His opinion is this is exacerbated by the 24 hr news coverage of such tragedies.  After thinking about it , I fully agree with him. I'm trying to find the clip so I can post it. Maybe someone can find it and post it.

Hope someone can post the discussion.

Video Games jeeezse that is not the cause. However, I will say that I have given some thought to this. I played hard core shooter games since they first came out. I have had a lot of fun playing them. I do know that they are a game and I do know they are not real events.
I think the difference is that I was brought up where everyone had a gun and hunted. Guns where in the rack of almost every truck and were brought to school magazines full windows rolled down and doors unlocked. Not one person ran to a truck stole the guns much less started killing people with the rifles in the them. I was exposed to the death of deer. hogs, and squirrels at a very early age. I remember vividly the first deer an uncle shot. I saw the hole and the blood and indeed it shocked me. However, my uncle sat me down and explained that the death of that beautiful deer would feed his family and that I must be aware that all animals are killed to hit our plates as TBONE steaks and such. I had never understood that something had to be killed to provide meat. Killed in a slaughter house or in the field or a corral. I was able to see the destruction caused by the bullets on the animals I was to take. I never ever not once was unaware of the danger of any gun after that first deer I saw my uncle kill. In todays world so much is made of not exposing children to hunting and by doing so they are not letting these kids start understanding what death is and what guns can do. They never see it for real and therefore do not have any understanding of it.
I made a point of taking all my children hunting with me and one of the reasons among many was to let them see how food is provided. Also, to let them see what death is and what guns can do. Every one of my children were shocked to see that first animal die and it sparked many questions and most times tears from them. They realized that that animal was never coming back and that my actions were the cause of its death. Harse yes but life is harse and children must begin to learn those things at an early age to prepare the for life. It enabled me to have many a long talk about nature and its seeming cruelty. They learned of the circle of life and I was able to speak to them of the circle of life for people. How we all lived and we all would die. It brought an awareness to them of just how precious life is not only to the animals but the humans as well. The shocking revelation that that animal would never walk the earth again and the understanding that it applied to humans as well. It made them aware to take an animals life only as neede to feed themselves or others. It made them realize that a humans life is limited and that it should be protected not squanderd. The children today are sheltered from all these things by most people in a misguided attempt to protect them. In my opinion they have done no service to their children only made them that much more incapable of dealing with everyday life. I have some children that hunt and some will not, however, they all enjoy and marvel at the beauty of the outdoors. They are humbled, by the spark of understanding of just how all things are connected and just how complicated the world is. They never once have questioned that there had to be a supreme power that put it all together not once. They clearly understood that it was no bang of rocks that put the animals and all things in nature together. It was by design of a surpreme being. They understood clearly that things had to die for other things to live plants animals insects all had a place and a reason. They learned to appreciate the life of the animals and ande most importantly the lives of any human.
The children of most today have no such understanding of nature or the world around them and that is why I believe that some truth, i repeat some truth, may be in the Video Game theory. They have not seen real death nor actualy caused a real death with a gun so they really have not seen the result of such actions.
While that shrink is most likely well meaning I bet he has not ever hunted. I bet he would be the first in line to decry the evil of hunting. He himself has no real understanding and he can not pass that along to his patients. I believe that if we as a nation put an emphasis and gun training and hunting as we as a nation did years ago. We would have fewer of these types of events happen.

redtail1949 post is valid, IMO.

i grew up in the late forties in semi-rural and on army bases; EVERYONE had a .22 or a shotgun in their house and car/pickup truck. we even had shooting teams in high school...very few of those now in public schools

nowadays, rural america is dying off, or better yet, being killed off, by suburban america...children are hidden from life by, in a great part, by public schools. they are taught that hunting and firearms are evil. it's even at the point now that we've seen children be expelled from school for drawing a picture of a firearm! or pointing their finger at someone as though they had a firearm...talk about paranoia!

i found it disturbing at how at one time, parents heralded the boy scouts as being a great organization and then scourged the military...duhhhh

proper education and training are key to giving a child proper, sane, perspective of firearms and their uses and ownership responsibilities.

we have a societal/cultural/behavioral problem, NOT a "gun" problem...and...IMO...the biggest problem the nation has is the sitting congress and white house.
don't squat while wearing your spurs...will rogers

You are very much on point dwalk. I have really paid attention to our politicians and the political process in the last few years and it just leaves me sick to my stomach. most are indeed crooks and liars. most are just in it for themselves with no true interest in this nation or the people they claim to represent. our children witness this daily and see on a daily basis the lack of moral values of those in power be it in government or in the companies they work for. to succeed in a career they see the way to the top is over the bodies of their co workers. (not literaly) they see local politicians to the national ones lie and cheat yet they stay in power. i feel the changes started in the 1960 era with all the so called efforts to right all the wrongs. what i have witnessed over these years started in the schools where people were given higher grades because of skin color and the work place where then same was inforced. a person not because of efforts was promoted but because of color. this things show just how well intentioned ideas get corrupted and never work. discipline was lessened and then almost outright banished for fear of a discrimination suit. that led to the collapse of our educational system. ask the well meaning now and they will make every excuse but never admit they were wrong. the attacks on the schools pledge of allegiance and prayer got so far out of hand. they could have done it differently but no all had to be banned. I certainly understand that there is a definate seperation of church and state. however the approach taken by the left was wrong and has resulted in the children of today.

What is wrong with you characters. The killings were Adams fault. That he was an unstable idiot helped it along but There is no possible justification for what he did. He is responsible.

you are absolutly right on that. that is the point all these people and politicians will look everywhere for an answer and it is right in front of them. this was a result of a deranged individual making a decision to murder. they will never accept that as the answer instead they will blame the type of firearm, the capacity of a clip, a video game, his mother for having the guns. however, sadly they will never put the blame where it belongs..on the person who did it.
