Cool custom benchrest Contender 6x47
« on: December 15, 2012, 02:15:59 PM »
I'm a relative newbie and I haven't seen one tricked out quite like this one. Can anyone comment?

I think it's drop dead gorgeous, but is it worth $1300? Can anyone tell me about the smith Vern Juenke, who I understand is getting old and his site is down?

Thanks.

It is pretty, but not worth $1300 to me.

I would pass.

I'll try to offer an honest assessment... hate to see someone new into TC's get taken.

IMO over priced when you add up the parts while not knowing a lot of factors that would make a difference.  The ad tells you very little.   I remember Vern, but that doesn't indicate just what he supposedly did to "customize" it.    Just bolt-ons... more?   Normally a "package deal" also means a savings for the buyer over buying it piecemeal.    Used price is not new price - asking price is not always selling price.

Is the frame factory stock, or tuned, or had a trigger job?  If so by whom?   Makes from a few bucks to another few bucks more difference in what its worth, as does the vintage.

Barrel made by who and from what brand blank?   SAAMI or a custom chamber?   Makes a big difference in what they cost new/what they are worth used.

Williams sights for the Contender are something like $70-$80 new if I remember, so worth less used.

No idea whose this one is.. but Contender comp/brakes are available for as little as $35 to 3-4 times that depending on who's/config (and not needed on a 6X47 anyway).

As figured maple goes, this set combined doesn't have full coverage, spalt, etc, etc, etc so a select grade and not one of the exhibition grades.

Dies also vary widely by what brand, condition, etc.    Can't remember what I sold my two sets for... maybe SlowSlim will know (don't remember if he bought one of them when he bought a 6X47 barrel from me).

YMMV, HTH

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Have one made up yourself and save quite a bit on that price! Shawn
