Anyone using a red dot on their levergun?
« on: December 13, 2012, 03:50:15 PM »
I'm thinking about putting one on my 1895SS and I was wondering if anyone else has? And what kind? I really like them for quick target acquisition and I think they would be ideal for the thick woods I hunt where the game can really be there and gone in a second...

I put a low end one on my Model 94 Saddle Carbine in .357. The only advantage it appears to have is in low light conditions. It sure messes up the lines of the gun however. I have gone back to the iron sites.

I have a Sightron red dot scope mounted on my Marlin 1895GS. I have it mounted on a scout scope mount from XS Sight Systems. I like it because I can leave both eyes open when shooting. That allows me to see everything in front of me as well as the red dot in the scope. Very easy to track on a moving target.

Ohhh, so many guns and so little time to buy them.  :)

I had a Ultradot on my Marlin 1894CSS. It worked
fine, but I just didn't like the looks. I went back to
the Skinner iron sights.

I use red dots on all my hunting rifles - several of which are levers.

I use all types, including reflex sights and holosights.  Most of my hunting is at relatively short range, so I find the standard 3 - 5 minute dots to be more than sufficient, though some of my red dots have 1 minute dots.

I shoot with both eyes open, and like the fact that the objective lens can be fogged - or even completely blocked, and I'm still able to make an accurate shot on game.  This is unlike a scope that would be rendered useless in this scenario.

I have red dot sights on a Marlin 1895, a BLR, a Savage 99, a Winchester 94 AE, and a Winchester 88.  I'm in the process of mounting one on a Winchester 94 Big Bore.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!

My wife has a reflex on her 1894 .357 marlin.  She is right handed but left eye doninent and scopes give her fits.  She likes it real well.  I prefer scopes on my centerfire guns but have cheap red dots on several 22s.

I tried a red dot sight but didn't like it however I did like the EOteck holo sight I had for a while on a AR 15. I think a small holo sight would be ok on a lever.

I put a Burris 135 on it and it works great. Thanks for everyone's input!

I probably would be better off with one because of my old eyes, but my Marlin would be insulted.  I have a Skinner receiver mounted peep, with a 1/16" Marble ivory bead front, which work great together.  They made a world of difference from the factory buckhorn and (too big) brass bead front.
