Just picked up a used Shikari in 44 mag.  Excellent shape and got it for 65 bucks!!
 
My questions is this.  I am concerned because I have been reading about how careful you need to be with what loads you shoot out of these.  All I want to do is go to the local store and buy brand name 44 mag loads.  Am I safe in doing this.  This is an older model I am sure from the 70's or so.
 
Also I was told I could shoot 44 special out of this as well.  True??

Shikari is a fine rifle, unfortunately, not one that I have.  I know it'll be fine with factory loads and yes, it'll shoot 44 Special.  Best of luck with your steal.

I have 1 in 45-70. You must watch the loads in it as it is a cast iron reciever, but standard factory 44 mag loads should be fine. I shoot a moderate trapdoor load in mine with no problems or signs of excessive presure. Have done so for 40 years.
 
I did retire mine but not for nice shooting, I have trouble seeing and needed a scope and mines not D/T for one.
 
Good luck and happy shooting, I'm sure it will do well.

Factory loads or reloads as long as they are not 'beyond the book' and you will be fine (and no T-bar either!). Mine was surprisingly accurate from light RB loads through full Magnum (different point of impact, of course), but most of my shooting was mid-data cast bullet loads with the old Lyman 429421 bullet.

I've had one in 45-70 since the late seventies.  It shoot up to moderate loads in it and it is wonderfully a accurate.  I always thought it had a steel receiver since it is case hardened.  I didn't know you could do that with cast iron.  I think you'll love your 44 Mag.

I have one of the 45-70's and a 44 mag both shoot extremely well the 44mag likes the winchester white box 44mag ammo which can be found at most wally worrlds

Just as you can shoot .357 Magnum, and .38 Special (regular and +P loads) out of a .357 Maximum.  You can shoot almost all .44Cal ammunition (.44 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Russian, .44 Colt, and .44 Bulldog) out of the .44 Magnum.  All will chamber safely except, I think 44-40?  Anyone remember/know for sure, please correct me.   Enjoy the rifle.
