Good Idea/ Bad Idea stevens crackshot chamber repair.
« on: December 12, 2012, 06:13:55 AM »
I acquired a really ugly Stevens Crackshot 26 in 22LR.

The rifling looks good but there is a bad spot in the chamber that causes cases to expand and stick. .22 shorts shoot fine and eject fine and even .22 short HPs are fine... The guy at the LGS told me that there is likely a ring in the chamber from firing .22shorts all its life and that I should just keep shooting shorts out of it and it will be fine. IMO shorts are boring, Im so excited to have a .22 small and light enough that it actually kicks I do not want to lose that.

I have a plan... Ive seen companies that make steel chamber inserts to convert .22mag to .22lr  so If i ream the chamber out to .22mag and install a chamber insert with green locktite the gun should be back to like new... am i right or wrong?

most likely , I have a MCA  insert for 30 carbine to 308 they work fine. There are also barrel liners aval. Not sure if they also line the chamber or not though.

its my theory that since you can shoot .22lr from a .hmr using this adapter that it would fix my problem. Ive been told relining a barrel costs $200+ where this might cost me $60.... just as long as no one EVER tries to fire a .22mag out of this little thing.

The MCA adapters aren't that much , they come blue or SS . I spent mos. trying to contact them its a waste of time just send a check and list of what you want. After many calls I got the guy he just said add a couple bucks for shipping . They came a few mos. later . The time of delivery depends on what is on hand , mine took some time as he was waithing for material .

I've never ran into one where the ring was actually missing metal. It was always carbon build up and could be soaked, scraped, cleaned and polished. May be worth looking into.
