.223 rem, .22 Hornet combo
« on: December 11, 2012, 02:55:37 PM »
A local gun shop here has a used .223 Handi with a synthetic stock that also comes with a .22 Hornet barrel.  Both barrels have inexpensive scopes on them and they're asking $500 for the lot.

I didn't check the Hornet barrel but the .223 was an ejector.  Does this mean it's more than likely a 1 in 9 twist?  I looked at the frame numbers but I forgot them before I got home a couple hours later.  Anyway does this seem a bit steep for this or am I just cheap?

If I got it, I'd have to sell my other .223 Handi and I've grown rather fond of it...

Opinions?

I think an ejector was "usually" 1:12 but may be around change over time :-\  Seems a little high to me depending on scopes and condition. Are they clean barrels w/o sight holes? If you have a 223 you like and want a Hornet, do what I did and find a Hornet barrel. It must have fit one of my frames cause both are complete rifles ;D  I had to settle so far for a Hornet barrel with sight holes :(  If you like em get em, life's short ;)

Prices seem to vary quite a bit between areas of the country but that sounds really high.  I would expect 2 compete rifles for that kind of money.

For around $160 total cost you can add a hornet barrel to your frame (assuming it's new enough).

Here's a new hornet if you want one.

For $500 it's not going to fly off the shelf. Let them sit on it awhile, then go make an offer. Or see if they'll take your Handi in trade and pay the difference.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

I typoed on that, it's an extractor rather than an a ejector like the one I already have.

It's on consignment so I figure if it's still there in a few months, I'll make an offer.  Handi rifles aren't that popular around here as far as I can tell so it may still be there.

I know where I can get a new .22 Hornet Handi for under $300 and I've been trying to convince myself that I'm not too broke to buy it...

The two I have are Superlites, is why I asked about the sight holes. 223 is clean barrel, not sure if they made a clean SL Hornet barrel. If you don't already load for the Hornet I'd just download the 223. Better brass and use the money to shoot more ;)  I forgot they made a standard barrel Hornet. Does seem high for what you described and what you already have.

Come to think of it, it did seem to have a lighter .223 barrel than the .223 I already have so it could be a superlight in that I'm not so interested.  I didn't handle the Hornet barrel but form the looks of it, if it did have sights, they were removed.

I do load for the K-Hornet but what I would do is send the Hornet barrel out to be rechambered to .221 Fireball.  I can't say why for sure but I want one...

Anyway I'll not likely go back for it.

I got a similar package deal last year, think I paid 325 or so. Sold the hornet for 150 or so, ended up with a 223 handi with6-24x50 tasco, sling, hammer spur, and 40 rounds for 175. 500 is way too high.

I've gotta agree. 500 is too high for cheap scopes..  If it were good glass, 500 could be a bargain.  In this case, it's not.  You can buy or build what you want for half the price without getting rid of a winner in the process.

it's too high!!! from what you describe I would think around $350-$375 would be fair and $400 would be max....<><....:)

Aren't Hornet barrels discontinued?  That was the best part of the deal I could see.

Hornet rifles are not listed in the 2012 catalog, but they are still listed on the H&R website and on the accessory barrel page, so if ya want one, best get it while you can.

Maybe you can buy the Hornet barrel from them.
