Broke in the .35 Whelen
« on: December 10, 2012, 04:54:46 PM »
I sent off my 45-70 to have a new shiny .35 Whelen barrel installed a couple of months ago.  Worked up a really good load with almost no effort with the first thing I tried....200 grain Hornady FTX and Varget.    Got a chance to hunt this past weekend at my in-law's Grandparents house.  This guy came out at 180yds at 4pm.  The old Handi did it's job.   Not the biggest buck in the woods, but a very nice, symmetrical MS 8pt.  I am proud of him.

How's the recoil on the 35 Whelen? I want one but don't like hard kickers.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

Good shooting!

How's the recoil on the 35 Whelen? I want one but don't like hard kickers.

The recoil is stout depending on the load. I notice a significant decrease when shooting my .356 Win.  ;)

Thanks, Dinny

hey thanks for the kind words guys!  It was a very memorable hunt.  My nephew got to hunt for the first time in a stand on his own and killed a 5pt as well...it was a great hunt!
@ Doc Fillem.....the recoil is pretty stout in the little handy.   It isn't anything that will hurt you as long as your scope has plenty of eye relief.    Of course, when I shoot at an animal I could shoot a howitzer and woldn't notice the recoil due to adrenaline.

Great deer and great caliber!
Lead me not into temptation but point me to it instead.
