I need a Handi refresher course
« on: December 10, 2012, 09:52:55 AM »
I have a couple of older Ultra Handi rifles, a pre-99 25-06 and a first yr 450 Marlin. I also have a stainless pepper laminate 22wmr sportster also. I am wanting to add another to the stable, something in the 7mm-08 to 30'06 range, leaning towards the '06.

1. What if any updates from then to now?
2. Any particular calibers to avoid?
3. Is Boyd's aftermarket wood worth it? I want a laminate, but will build if I need to?
4. Any trigger improvements on the new models?
5. Any caliber not on my list that should be, longest shot is 100yds on deer, 50-75yds on pigs.

Anything else I should look for or avoid?

Thanks

I highly recommend the Boyd's stocks. I just got the thumbhole laminate in Forest Camo. Real nice fit and I really like the satin finish they put on them.
I don't know enough about the rest of your questions to give an informed answer. I am kicking around the idea of getting another barrel and am leaning towards the 35 Whelen. I like the fact that they offer a barrel with open sights for it and you could make up some loads with cheap pistol bullets for plinking.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

Something in the 7mm-08 to 30'06 range, leaning towards the '06;

In my opinion you want a .308

1. What if any updates from then to now?

None... except maybe the new thumbhole synthetic Handi stock... most folks like them alot, also the DNZ Gamereaper one piece mounts are available from H&R directly.
2. Any particular calibers to avoid?

Any of the 7mm to .30 caliber guns will suit you and are all equally adequate.

3. Is Boyd's aftermarket wood worth it? I want a laminate, but will build if I need to?

Yes it is worth it... the Sterling thumbhole set is very nice... be warned that the forearm does not come with a frame spacer, that will need to be purchased seperately.

4. Any trigger improvements on the new models?

No trigger improvements from the factory... but check the faq's for DIY jobs.

5. Any caliber not on my list that should be, longest shot is 100yds on deer, 50-75yds on pigs.

Personally believe the .308 is the best all round caliber... but for your uses the .357 reamed to MAX or the .44 Mag are also good options... cheap to shoot using hard cast bullets.

Anything else I should look for or avoid?

You should definitely get yourself a Handi... there are many calibers to choose from, in addition to the above noted (.45/70 & .500 S&W)... and you should AVOID taking too long.

I think you have yourself covered

in that event, a 30-06 or a 35 Whelen would fill the void

Fifty to a hundred yard shots?  I'd go 30-30 or better yet, the mighty 45-70.  Unless you don't reload.  The 45-70 is such a verstile caliber.  I cast for mine, in fact just got done casting up ten pounds of 500 grainers.

You can loose your Handi-holic license if you don't have at least one of those two calibers you know.  Just sayin'.

I been looking and I think a 270 or 308 is the two best options. I want something my daughter can shoot also. I think the 270 for me and her and possibly a '06 for me only. I really like that caliber and I have 6 bolt rifles in '06.

What tools, punches etc, do I need to tear down and work the trigger?

Where is the best place to buy new? I am not opposed to buying one sight unseen, I don't recall ever seeing a bad one.

Review the FAQ for trigger work and you'll find process and tools.
Its hard to go wrong with the '06, especially since you are set up for it, but 'variety being the spice....', and all that, maybe its time to get that 270 (BIL has one and its a dandy for accuracy) and play with it for a while.

I may have inherited a bias toward it from my father but, if all the deer and moose meat in his freezer means anything, I would say you can hardly go wrong choosing the .270 Win.
With its' rather soft recoil and flat trajectory it can also build confidence in younger shooters while remaining an excellent choice for all but the big bears ( never mind the Iniut who like to go out with their .243s' after polar bears ).

With ranges less then 100 yds I would go with what I sighted last.  I hunt with a .30-30, .444 and a 7-08 and usually pick the .30-30 since I reload for it and shoot it more.
