"Stepped" frames and barrels
« on: December 08, 2012, 07:45:26 PM »
I read (forget where) that Toppers with rifled barrels were made w/ 'stepped' frames and receivers until 1973. Is this so?
The step reduced sight height and make the rifles lighter.
I have an 'AJ' numbered model 158 30-30, 1972 manufacture, 'stepped. Barrel stamped serial numbered to receiver.
When did this model first come on market?
How much weight was saved?
I much prefer the stepped models to the current production, at least as regards weight and handling.
Imagine a stepped Topper with a titanium frame!  Scandium might work too.

If Ruger can bring back the flat top Blackhawk, why can't NEF resurrect the 'stepped' models?
Ain't they got any imagination?

I remember them on earlier guns, especially the combo .30-30/20 gauge but haven't seen them in a long time.  Following is my "stepped" barrel .410 Stephens.  I don't know how well the "step" will show though.  You can see the step about half way up the chamber and how much thinner the upper part above the chamber is compared to the sides.  Very light .410.

IIRC, H&R way back used to have a wonderful small frame; just what many of us would like for the small, low pressure chamberings.
Imagination?, probably yes, but if they cant sense a profit it wont happen today. Even some apparently popular chamberings have been dropped, likely from slow sales volume, as much as 'we' like them.
