Help with Barrel / reciever slack
« on: December 08, 2012, 01:56:18 PM »
I was out target shooting today and noticed slack in my barrel/receiver ,had never noticed it before.
I can hold the barrel by the end and shake it and feel the wobble from the butstock end. I measured lockup with a feeler gauge and it will lock on .005 but wont lock on a .007 is this normal and is it dangerous, should i send it back for repair or keep shooting it?
Did i do something to cause the slack or does it just happen over time?

I'll bet you had some burs under the plastic piece. If very tight it could have masked a barrel fitment problem.

Remove the forend, and put the barrel back on the frame and lock it up. Is the barrel loose on the frame when closed? If not, go to the faq's and look for barrel fitting. You may need to shim your barrel.

If its tight, proceed to below.

Then the two screws holding the plastic piece on. Make up a shim from a piece of card board or paper and re install. See if that takes away the slop.

I can shake it and feel the slack with or w/o the forearm. Do i need a shim up front on the large round lug the barrel mounts to?

Buttstock bolt isn't loose and you feel that when you "shake it"? :-\

Yes check the stock bolt before you do any permanent alterations. If you bought the gun brand new send it back.

The slack is in the action/lockup,i tried the barrel on another rifle  receiver and it was really loose on it also ,i wonder what caused the sudden loose-ness? Will they fix it if i send it in?

H&R will fix it for you, follow the instructions on the repair page below, ask them to cover return shipping too, they'll send a UPS return shipping label.
