Need help on stock
« on: December 08, 2012, 06:59:24 AM »
Just got in a Boyds laminated thumbhole stock and forend for my Hornet, first thing is the forearm doesnt have the piece on the end that pivots against the frame, also the screw from my pallet wood stock will not fit (too short) to attach the forearm with the Boyds forearm. Is this tipical for a Boyds stock?

I've yet to see a 100% "drop in" from Boyds, or any other supplier for that matter.

Boyds done an excellent job on a laminate nutmeg stock for one of my bolt guns, its beautiful well finished and perfect fit.  This was more ignorance on my part as  I looked at their site and I now see it has my symptoms on the page as possible things to expect. Now I have a problem as I don't wont to take off the piece from my pallet wood forearm, so I am in need on a 2nd one. Also my Hornet barrel is an old Topper and doesn't take the current forearm threaded screw and I don't know what length I'll need. Anybody ran into this same problem?   Thanks   .DT

Plastic forend spacers are available from Brownells, maybe Midway.  Blued steel spacers maybe still available from toth tool:

Vintage barrels have a ¼"-28 threaded forend stud, this info is in the FAQs, there's also a 6mm flathead metric machine screw that's mentioned as working, both are available at Ace and True Value hardware stores,  I bought one for my M158 barrel, get a 1" or ¾" and cut it to fit if too long, buy a nut at the same time, run it on the screw first, then cut it with a hacksaw, chamfer the edges of the cut end with a file, then run the nut off to clean up the threads, it'll work perfect, done it thousands of times since my grandad taught me the trick about 50yrs ago.  ;)

Brownell's is backordered on the spacer, Numrich and H&R have them, screws are #6 flathead wood screws.

I have the same setup arriving next week.  Does the forearm come drilled for the screws?

Also my old forearm bolt, its head is 0.465 in width and sits recessed into my old forearm, this will not work with the new forearm drilled hole as it measures 0.380 and is not recessed for the bolt head to sit in flush.
