Shotgun barrel on a 223 frame
« on: December 06, 2012, 05:49:13 PM »
I have read about H&R shotguns having a larger firing pin than centerfire Handis. My question is  if I were to install a shotgun barrel on my 223 frame, would the smaller firing pin cause problems with the shotgun shells? I checked and my 20 gauge barrel fits and locks up nice and tight. It would be nice to carry an extra barrel in the place of a complete shotgun. Thanks in advance for any info offered.

Your 20 gauge barrel on the SB2 frame (your 223 frame) will work fine.  You can add shotgun barrels and rifle barrels through the barrel accessory program.  Put the 223 barrel on the shotgun frame (SB1) and you will regret it.  Maybe not the first time, but at some point it will fail and the shooter will be injured.

The answer to your question is no.  As long as the barrel locks up nice and tight, there is no problem with shooting shotgun shells.  Enjoy your new combo.

Thank You both for the quick replies. I won't put the 223 barrel on the shotgun frame, but thanks for the reminder. I also checked my 410 Tamer barrel and it lokks up nice as well. I now have a triple threat combo, this will be fun!

Though you may not like the Monte Carlo comb with the shotgun; only your cheekbone can tell you, or where you hit. Likely no issue for the 410, but stiff 20's maybe (I wouldnt try a 12 myself.....).

I had an old style synthetic monte carlo stock on my 20ga TDC turkey gun for a couple years, it has sights on the vent rib, so a bit higher than a slick barrel smoothie, with 3" 1½ oz turkey loads it was a bit uncomfortable, so I sanded the comb down until it worked.

What a gift of understatement!  ;)
Just how long did it take for that undercheek bruise to heal?

No bruise, it wasn't that tight to my cheek, but I wanted a little insurance for an offhand shot that may not be in perfect conditions.  ;)

Thanks for the reply. I shouldn't have much of a problem as atrhritis limits me to low base shotshells and by plain vanilla handloads. I use TrailBoss in my 45-70s and 30-06s. It works for me because I don't hunt. I wanted to be able to use the shotgun barrels if It bacame necessary to travel light.

I would go ahead and experiment with the shotgun barrel on it and see how it does.
Id like to hear more about the '06 Trail Boss load(s) too.
