Colt SAA 1st generation chambering list
« on: December 06, 2012, 05:02:33 PM »
Does anyone have or can direct me to a list of the chamberings for the 1st generation colt SAA, everything I have been able to find on line says they were chambered in dozens of calibers from .22 to 476 Eley.

thanks

There are books, I have a little book titled "The COLT Single Action Army Revolver", A Pocket Chronology".  Published 1982 by Larry Hacker.  Probably out of print.  There are books on Colt by L.R. Wilson.  I could list the calibers in the book, but I'm too lazy at the moment.....
As many as 150.683 in .45 Colt, ans few as 1 in .32 rimfire...

I am trying to find out how many in 32 colt, not the .32/20 or .32 colt new police, I know it is rare but I don't think it is as rare as the .22 rimfire models. Thanks for the tip, I will look for the Pocket Chronology.

IIRC there were .32 Short Colt, .32 Long Colt (which may not have been separately chambered) and the .32Colt's New Police was the same as the .32 S&W Long, but with a flat tip on the otherwise round nose bullet, as was typical of Colt's.

That is correct, the .32 colt short and .32 colt long are dimensionally the same as the .32 rimfire, Marlin shipped their 1891 lever guns with firing pins for the rimfire and the centerfire, both rounds were loaded with heeled bullets, just like the .22 and .32 rimfires. Colt came out with the .32 colt in 1875. A .32 smith and Wesson or as colt called it the .32 colt new police will not chamber in a .32 colt, it is too wide and the rim is a little bit bigger.

Winchester still loads factory ammo for the .32 colt short, they have one loading for it, it is an 80gr heeled lead round nose bullet. 32 colt long you have to reload for.
