HELP! Handi won't open!
« on: December 06, 2012, 03:18:07 PM »
I searched and checked the FAQs, nothing there. I put my .22 K Hornet barrel on a different frame than the one it was factory fitted to as a  regular Hornet. Shot a bunch of Privi in it to fireform the cases to the new K chamber. Worked fine. I finally got my K dies and now the thing won't open up. It opens just about a 1/4" when I depress the latch, with or without the forend. Tried smacking it over my knee, ouch. Now what?

Check the firing pin.  Make sure its not broke and sticking out into chamber.

As Jason suggested, if it's got a spent round in the chamber, the firing pin may have stuck in the primer, possibly from a pierced primer or bad/bent pin, try dry firing it a couple times to see if it will release, or just use the tip of a knife blade to force the firing pin to the rear.

If the chamber is empty, it could be a broken latch or release.

Thanks for the help guys. It is the firing pin. It acts like there's no spring in there. Turn the frame straight up and it flops back in, point it down and it protrudes out the face, just the force of gravity moves it in and out. I was wrong above, it is the frame the barrel was fitted to by the factory. I'm anxious to try out my new Redding K dies so am putting the K barrel on another frame for now. It locks up good but has very slight side play. Hopefully that won't mess with accuracy too much, I have high hopes for this K Hornet barrel.  I guess I'll have to pull the firing pin out of the original frame and see what's up.

have you had it apart before?

sounds like a broken spring.

is the firing pin point in decent shape, or is there damage?

The pin looks ok, nice and round. Never had it apart. The only thing wrong with it that I can tell is it doesn't retract when I let go of the trigger. But, it will go back in with a very light push. I'll do a little homework, see what's in there.  EDIT: Got it! It was sticking when protruded, not retracting when the trigger's released. Squirted some WD40 in there and cleaned up some minor burrs on the face of the pin hole and bingo. I can actually hear it click back in when the trigger is released. Now back to loading some K Hornet ammo. I'm starting with the Hornady 40 gr. V-Max and LilGun.
