One Piece Scope Mount
« on: December 06, 2012, 11:47:18 AM »
I recently purchased one of the one-piece scope mounts for my H&R from DNZ. I like it, but wondered if anyone knew of a similar product that has see-thru options for open sites? Or am I going to have to crank up a CNC machine and start production?

The only see-thru H&R ring mount I'm aware of is the Ironsighter.

See-thru mounts are an abomination (oops, did I say that  :-X ). Way too high for good scope acquisition (and ain't scopin' what ya got it on for?), and nobody really uses the see thru for open sights if they have a scope. The incidence of scope failure requiring the opens is rare, and you could just take the scope off in that case.

The only reason I think a see through would be needed is if you plan on having to use it for up close bear defense.  Other than that, I would do as gcrank says and just remove it in case of scope failure.

I've always used iron sites on anything 50 yards or closer when I have a rifle equipped with them. Easier to acquire the target and ensure accuracy in my opinion. It's not for everyone and does require some practice which can be done with any 22 rimfile shooting the eyes out of birds or squirrels.

Most of my shooting has been with open and peep sights, offhand. It took me a while, and failing eyes, to move to scopes and I discovered the key to finding the target in the scope is keeping both eyes open and not having too much magnification for the distance. I really like my old Weaver K-2.5 and K-3 for a wide field of view and easy 'find'. For me, every time Ive messed about with a gun with see-thru's it has been an unsatisfactory experience, though probably with some use and practice I would adapt (if I just had too). Best thing is that if it works for you, go for it. I only mention the 'downside' from my experience for someone unfamiliar who may be thinking about it; certainly not to be critical of your choice.
