Handi Rifle Gunsmithing: Wayne York - Thumbs Down
« on: November 29, 2012, 07:09:50 AM »
So, I had a Handi Rifle with a custom barrel in 357 Maximum. I found I didn't shoot it much so I decided to get it chambered for 358 Win. I found some good things about Wayne York online, so I contacted him and sent the rifle to him to be chambered and the extractor modified to the new caliber.

I got the rifle back today so the first thing I did was chamber a 358 round. It slid right past the extractor into the chamber. The only way I could get it to work is if I balanced the rim carefully on the extractor and closed it carefully and open it slowly and carefully. Then it works sometimes. If I use it in a normal way, it doesn't extract at all, or you cant close the action because the case has slipped past the extractor.

I called Wayne and he told me it's hard to get that extractor to work right and suggested I order a 308 extractor and put it in. He offered to do it if I sent the rifle back. No offer to pay shipping, or to refund the portion of his fee I spent on the extractor work. He said they fire one round and it extracted when they did.

So, where can I order a 308 extractor so I can do the work I just paid someone else to do?

I'm not real clear here.   :-\   My 7x57 and some other of my Handys function that way.  The round slips past the ejector and fully seats in the chamber.  I then close the action the same as I would if the round had been stopped by the ejector, and after the round is fired the empty ejects normally.  I never had a problem.

Are you saying this isn't the case with your rifle?   ???

If it is not, it would seem that the problem would lie in the extractor as Wayne suggests; maybe a little to much off the top so to speak...  ;D

I believe Tim modifies his own extractors.

When the round slips past the extractor into the chamber, the action won't close.

Just before I wrote this post I closed the action WITHOUT a round in the chamber and the extractor broke off. Unbelievable.

The simple solution to begin with would have been to order a 30-06 family extractor to swap out for the rimmed 357 extractor, going from rimmed to rimless is a PITA to begin with, Numrich has em in stock. Also make sure the leaf spring is installed, if it's missing or installed improperly it won't work right. I've worked with many rechambers and had to rework a lot of ejectors and extractors done by others that weren't made right, so it's not unusual for problems to pop up with em.  :-\

Just in case you're actually working with an ejector barrel, that's an entirely different kettle of fish and requires modification of the underlug and a lift button installed.  :-\

Seems so to me Wayne should be fixing it and paying the tab for shipping both ways. It's a screw up on his part plain and simple... if you pay someone good money to get something done it should be done right... the first time. ;)
