Encore Katahdin forend?????
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:27:18 PM »
I just ordered a 20" 45-70 Katahdin barrel and according to the specs on the TC website it looks like the 45-70 Katahdin and the Encore muzzleloaders take the same black synthetic forend (7514) while all the other Encores, including the 460 S&W and the 500 S&W can use the standard black synthetic 7569 forend. Why on earth does the 45-70 use a different forend than the Katahdin 460 and 500 (and all the others for that matter)??? Is this just a typo on the TC site??? Thanks for any help regarding this matter.

Has to be a typo, I have no idea why it would use a muzzleloader forend. I have the 20" .460  barrel, and all of the forends that fit the heavy 26" and 28" ProHunter barrels, fit the 20" barrel.

Thanks Dave. I suspected it might be a mistake. Any chance that I could get you to take a measurement of the diameter of your .460 barrel at the screw holes? I'd like to confirm that the 45-70 and the .460 are indeed the same O.D. Thanks.

Just FWIF, I use a Pro-Hunter shotgun forend and change the screws to fit rifle barrels, add proper amount of spacers, and it works just fine on all my barrels except the front stuffer ;D .  Yep there is a little gap around the lighter barrels but it doesn't bother me in the least...I just call it super-floatin' 8) .  Works for moi!! ;)

There is a slight difference between the katahdin forend and the standard 24"/26" forend.  I have the 500 barrel and have tried both the standard forend and the katahdin.  The katahdin fits alot better.  The katahdin barrel has a different taper than the 24/26" barrel.  I'll try and post a pic of the difference between the two.  You will be able to see the molding is deffinitely different.  I would buy the katahdin forend, not the standard 24/26 forend.  I think the pro-hunter forend and the katahdin forends are interchangeable, but I'm not certain on that.

The katahdin forend is on the left.  You can see by the forward mounting screw hole, the post is a little different.  Also, the hole post is rounded in the katahdin and flat in the stantard.  If you use a standard 24/26" forend, it tends to rock a little on the barrel because the channel is not quite as wide as the katahdin forend at the foreward screw.
