Realistic range capabilities of handi in 357 mag
« on: November 26, 2012, 02:07:48 PM »
I am looking to get a handi to put on my four wheeler for cruising around the farm. I want something to shoot at a coyote  if I see if or any other kind of varmit.  I was just wanting to know the realistic expectations for coyote accuracy out of a 357 mag handi.

Coyotes are rather frail in my experience. So, with a 357, I would say as far out as you can hit them.

Take 15 minutes and ream it to 357 Maximum and double the range. i would take a shot at a dog at 150 yards. with the magnum i would have to limit that to under 100. many guys that are better shooters would push it out much farther.

Unless your farm is surrounded by houses (I deer hunt in an area like this) you need a 223 not a 357 mag.  An average shooter with a average accurate rifle will be able to double their effective range with a 223 over a 357 mag.

+1 on the 223.  The 357 is a great woods gun, but it's range is not it's strong point.  223 easily reaches 200+yrds, the 357 will too but it will huff and puff the whole way and will loose power fast. In 223 you can load soft points for yotes and deer, ballistic-tip for pests, and FMJs for the stew meat (squirrel and rabbit).  FMJs shouldn't do as much meat damage on small game, especially with a head shot.  Ammo is also really cheap for the 223 compared to other cartridges with similar reach.

357 mag under 100 yards because of trajectory
Lead me not into temptation but point me to it instead.

I agree with cudatruck.  Ream a .357 Mag to Maximum and you've got a great all round farm gun.  Any average shooter can shoot a Maxi 200 yards.  Spend some time with it and it'll do 300.  Take a look at this link:

Here's a pic of my go to farm gun:
