45/70 does it again.
« on: November 26, 2012, 11:22:12 AM »
I " relocated" 2 fat does today using the 45/70 and 405 gr bullets. That's now 3 years in a row the 45/70 with 405 gr bullets has done its job to perfection. :)  I'm finding out I'm getting too old to drag deer out of a timbered area.

Congrats on your success!
Pretty much why I hunt my pasture roads, and when I shoot a deer with my 45-70 I only have to drive up to it and usually no need to drag very far at all, and that's only if the deer didn't drop in it's tracks which is pretty often.
400 grain Speer jacketed flat point is what I'm using....They just don't go very far!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I reload, but use the Rem. 405 gr. bullets. It's not only hard on deer. It's also hard on the trees after the bullet passes through the deer. Look at my Avatar.

I got lucky( finally) of getting a nice Doe at close range with what I consider mild 405 Rem reloads. Much to my surprise there was more jellied meat that I had hoped for and with a destroyed heart the Deer still went for an estimated 30 yards.
I've done better with a similar shot the previous season with a 6.5x55 160 gr Hdy. reload/ Bang-Flop.

Deer can go 25-30yd. in only how many seconds, dead on their feet before they realize it, any 'sporting' caliber in the heart. They are tougher than me, Id just lay down there and die.
Too bad the 45-70 is such a poor cartridge to be still taking game after how many years........it just wont go away or realize its dead too........... ;)

I don't think the 45-70 is a bad cartridge. The 6.5 messed up meat, so did my 30-06. None of my shots were into the shoulder but the bloodshot area extend to them.

Kimber45: Any idea what your MV is on those reloads?

BBF-the MV is about 1629 fps. when checked

It's kinda funny.  The last deer I shot with the 405 I overestimated the range.  I was going for a high shoulder shot. The deer dropped where it stood.  When I got there I couldn't find a wound so I put a round from my Blackhawk behind his ear and dressed him out.  Nothing in the body cavity.  It wasn't til I hung him in the meat room and skinned him that I found the bullet had taken out his spine.  You could poke your finger right through there.  There was a tiny bit of damage done to the forward end of the backstraps, but no internal or external bleeding.  It was just as though you ran a power drill through there.

I also have a pre 64 Mod. 70 in 30-06 and one on .270. And a Ruger #1 in 30-06. All have been retired because of the 45/70. It's just more fun.

I stopped reloading for 45/70 when I discovered the Remington 405 grain.  Superbly accurate stuff with more energy that most of us will ever require.

I need to "bleed" one more rifle before I can return to using the 45-70 and that won't happen 'til next fall.

guess i like to drop them with a nice head shot instead of sending a whiskey barrel between their ribs.  dropped two deer standing 2 feet from each other last year with head shots.  small doe about 60-70 yrds away with her tail towards me.  used my handi 308 survivor with 165 gr hornady btsp and shot her in the back of the head.  thought i missed as the recoil knocked me off target and i didn't hear any running.  she fell on the other side of a hole and i couldn't see her on the ground.  as i started walking up to check i see another deer standing in the same spot with its back to me.  walked within 40 yrds and put a round in the back of its head also.  when i got the spot there were two deer laying 2 feet from each other.  DRT.  no meat loss and nice clean guts to pull.  you guys can have your wall mounts, i prefer freezer filler.

Head shot with a 45-70 at those distances would have been just as easy for you and just as doa.
