Extractor question
« on: November 26, 2012, 06:39:16 AM »
I'm new here, so don't know my way around yet. Forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place.
I have an H&R in .223 and would like to know if the extractor can be replaced or modified to eject.
Thanks!

Welcome!

Take a gander at the top of the page in the "stickied" area. Then click on the FAQ's. Much like prego... It's in there!! ;)

Hey 'Jim, you look familiar. ;)

I have been considering this same conversion myself and it has been done.

Not as simple as parts replacing but, thanks to Tim's resourcefulness, do-able with minimal tooling resources.

The FAQs here are a wonderful thing yet addictive at the same time.  Once you get in there, you'll be a while working your way back out.  Lots of cool stuff to absorb.

There's more than one ejector to extractor conversion option in the FAQs, the temporary and easy permanent  conversion will make it extract, but it won't help with sticking brass, the factory style extractor conversion is the only option to fix that issue.

That's the only one I saw that goes form extractor to ejector though.  I may have missed some.

My ectractor is what I belive to be the most recent and does have the slot, so I have to take both apart and look them over.  I don't even know if the slot is the same dimensions as the older ejectors yet.

It seems like this question goes around the forum periodically.  Some of us, myself included prefer the extractor.  I have had two converted from ejector to extractor, but there is possibly an easier way out.  Try posting an ad in the "Want to Trade" section.  My first Handi, the .45-70, was an ejector.  Another member here and I traded barrels and we were both happy.  A lot less work that way ;)

Hi Jim
I too like ejectors
I'd prefer all my handis be ejectors
to date, I've never heard of ANY Ruger1 shooters wishing they were extractors

Thanks for all the responses, guys.

I do a lot of 'coon hunting and I have worked up a coupla' really light loads for my rifle to use it toward that end. When the weather turns really cold, it's impossible to get the case out of the chamber with gloves on. Thus, my desire for the ejector.

The trade option might be the easiest way for me to do this if I can find somebody that wants to trade a .223 barrel with ejector for one with an extractor.

Thanks again for the help!
