« on: November 25, 2012, 03:29:11 PM »
What die set do I need? Will I have to get a different bullet seater for the pointed bullet?
Thanks, ear

I modified mine, other have sent to MFG for a proper seater stem.

Most any 357Mag die set will do the job for you.

I sent a bullet in to Lee.  About a week and eight bucks later I had the seater.  The same die set does all of them.

I bought a set of RCBS from the classifieds a couple weeks ago that only say 357 MAX on them. Haven't been able to find them in cats. or on web to see why they just say MAX. Maybe they were only made for a while or people were just using the mag dies and no demand for these. Have an extra toolhead and will just set it up for loading MAX. They came with 3 seater stems but don't think any are for pointy. Have to look closer and if not, see about ordering the right one.
Anybody else have these dies that only seem to be for MAX? Thanks

The RCBS pointed bullet seater plug part number is in the FAQs as well as other suggestions for pointed seater die options.

Thanks Tim, I remember hearing there were options in the faqs. Finally got back on 223 and haven't looked the plugs over in my set. I know round and semi wc is in there but don't remember the other. Probably order one so I'll have it when ready. Thanks for putting the part # in there. Was wondering about the dies, Googled the part# and checked on RCBS site and in loading catalogs. They look as new. Was gonna use my Dillon 38/357 dies till these came up. Some dies seem shorter than others :-\  Don't know if that would even matter.

I have a set of the RCBS MAX dies and the 3 seater stems none of which are for pointy bullets.

I found an old 357 Mag Lyman steel die set at a local shop for $10. It came with 3 seater plugs so I modified one of them with a drill for the 180 SSP's. I use Lee carbide 38 Special dies for resizing and expanding the case mouth.

Thanks Vic, I haven't looked them over real good yet. Scanned the instructions but didn't see any thing special. May try to modify or just buy one. Have to look in my Dillon box as somewhere years ago I remember other seaters included. Mostly was curious if they were much different from regular 38/357 dies. I'll just set up a tool head for MAX ;D

I have a Lee die set for the 38 Special. I had a little trouble with the bullet seating die being a little too short. So I bought the Hornady seating die, no issues with mine. So now I use the carbide Lee sizing die and the Hornady seating die. It handles the SSP bullet with out a hitch. It does get hung up a little (in the sliding sleeve) when using .358 diameter bullets, but still does it OK

As mentioned, the Hornady set comes with both seater plugs. The standard and one for Spire point bullets. That's the set I bought.
