Handi 500 Rear sight update.
« on: November 22, 2012, 05:26:16 PM »
I have read the faq's section on sights a couple of times but I came up with an idea and am more confused now than when I started.
I realise that diffrent calibres will sometimes require different barrel diameters, therefore diffrent site bases.
If I don't have to change the rear site base on my Handi 500 s&w, I should be able to put any open site or fiber optic site or peep site on that base if the dove tail is the correct width? No
Just leaving the height of the front site in question.
I'm asking because there are few sites for sale here in Australia or available for international order, but none say what barrel diameter the base will suit, or they can't tell me if the pre drilled holes in my H&R will line up with their site base.
So I'm grasping at straws, take their site off it's dove tail base and put it onto the 3/8th base that is still on my Handi.
Has anyone done this kind of mismatch before?

What you see there is not the 'typically mentioned nominal 3/8" dovetail' in sight lists, that is a ramp for the siding adjustable sight.
A 3/8 dovetail sight goes crosswise on the barrel or base. Google up some sight pics to get an idea, or look at some online catalogs for pics of sights.

Handi 500 Rear sight update.

Through my own miss adventure I lost the rear fiberoptic sight on my Handi. And so far no one who sells the upgrades most commonly recommended can post to Australia.
But Truglo wrote back to me saying that they supply a few different models of sight that end up on the Handi's. They asked me for a picture of the sight.
Easy, but I lost it.
So they got a discription and a pic of what was left.
Hopefully they can help.
By the way the people from H&R were very nice when I got them on the phone and seemed very concerned that it was a long distance call, but don't ship direct to Australia. I now have the name of their agent here so I will try that route as well.

If you hit more shipping hassles let us know; might be some suggestions to help out.
Sure wish I could take a trip there, all it takes is money.......
