Whelen as barrels or complete gun?
« on: November 12, 2012, 08:26:41 AM »
Hello all,

I do not see the 35 Whelen listed on the H&R website for complete rifles.  Is caliber only available as a rebarrel?

Does anyone know the optimal bullet weight for jacketed bullets with this twist?  Is there a different optimal weight when loading cast?  Thanks for the insight.

Bud's has two of the four versions in stock, wood and black syn, it's also available in Handi-grip and syn camo if you can find em.  ;)

Concerning the optimal bullet weight, I've shot 200gr, 225gr and 250gr in both of mine, they all work fine in the 1:16" twist, the 250gr Speer spitzer starting out at 2525fps is still running over 1700fps at 400yds, the JBM stability calculator indicates the bullet would still be stabile at 1000fps, the old myth that the 1:16" twist won't stabilize 250gr spitzers is just that, a myth based on ignorance IMO. The optimal bullet weight would be determined by what you're using if for, the 200gr is likely the best choice for deer at typical ranges.

I agree with Doc and Tim.

You are not going to have bullet problems with twist in this caliber.  IMHO the 200g (I like the Hornady 200g spitzer. But hear very good things form the FTX 200) is a excellent whitetail bullet and shoots damn flat too!
This caliber really comes into its own with a 250g.  I have also shot some 280g lead RN bullets at moderate velocities with excellent accuracy!

The Whelen is a great caliber!

Since I would only use it once or maybe twice a year I was kinda leaning towards just getting my 223 fitted with the barrel, but also getting some laminate pistol grip stock with a decelerator pad and enough lead in the butt to balance it if need be.  Though, getting a whole new gun and buying the stocks I want and selling the factory stocks would probably be a difference of less than $100 . . . hmmm

This would be a whitetail and black bear gun in north MN.

If a guy was to get a complete Ultra Thumbhole gun for the purpose of getting a Whelen bbl for it, which caliber would you get?  The idea would be to get a caliber that would make for a quick sale of that new unfired bbl.  I'm thinking 243?

:) The Whelen will be short range enough.  Unforetunately, I have no use for a short range big bore.
