NIB-Marlin 336W-Got a question,hope someone can tell me?
« on: November 10, 2012, 04:58:04 AM »
Went to a sports chain store sometime back. Saw a NIB, on the rack, Marlin 336W. I held this rifle in my hands. The first thing I noticed right away was the reciever, lever, barrel and load tube were not polished. They were a very dark, almost black in color and the finish was like some kind of powder coating. Has anyone seen one of these yet? The box identified the rifle as being made mid-year of this year. I have never, never seen one like this. Also, the action suprised me the most.....it was almost as smooth as a Henry. I'm just totally confused about this, for I have been a Marlin owner for years and have several lever's, nothing like this one.

Cost cutting for Remington made marlins.  Takes time and $ to polish the metal.  Smooth action?, maybe there is hope for the new "Remlins".  DP

Remington made some of their brand rifles like this. The Rem 78 which was a 700 but with this barrel that looks bead blasted to me. They put a birch stock on it and sold it cheap. I have one and it is my favorite go to rifle. The bead blasted finish holds oil like parkerizing so the danger of rusting is reduced. I threw the birch stock away and replaced it with plastic. It shoots as well as most 700s and I don't have to worry so much about getting it wet.

Oh, and the action is very slick. I suppose all 700s are like this now, this was the first I had seen. With the bolt unlocked you can tip the barrel down and the bolt slides closed, tip the barrel up and the bolt slides open. Smoothest action I have ever seen.

I have one that I bought a few months back. Mine is a very good shooting rifle.
