My vote is for the 444 marlin.  It is a rimmed cartridge without any of the 35's ftf issues.  It lends itself well to load experimentation.  You could probably even play around with black powder,even though you already have the 45-70 for that ::)   The recoil is very manageable compared to the 500 S&W and the range is better.  I prefer 44 cal or larger for casting my own, but that's just me I guess.  They are all great calibers, but I just got my 444 so I'm kinda biased ;) Honestly, I would have a hard tome choosing between those three as well :-\

Personally, I would watch the classifides and grab the next 280 that pops up. The 280 is a excellent history if good accuracy and plenty of horse power for long range big game hunting.

None of the calibers you mention (35Whelen CAN work) are known for being "long range" firendly.  ::)

Since you don't need a long range gun then a Handi in the pistol calibers would work well for you.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

ill probably use it for deer and hogs mostly im not really going to be using it for anything specific i just want another handi and those are the calibers i like long range is no concern of mine as i have a .25-06 ruger and a 7mm ruger its just a hard choice i really like the .35 whelen but im concerned on the ftf issues ive been hearing about im leaning hard against the .444 marlin rite now even though i have a a .45-70 seems like a fun rifle to play with so does the .500 also and since ill be back in indiana in a year and a half then i casn hunt with it there but thats not a pressing issue for me now since im not there lol

Since you  have 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm and .30 caliber covered... it sounds to me like you need a .22 caliber centerfire... get a .223!  ;)

My 280 is a pleasure to shoot. Very accurate with factory ammo. Hope to get bloody this deer season

Guess I should have read a little closer...  ::) :-[ ;)

Sensability negates the 500 and the 444 cause you have the 45-70.... GOOD THING SENSABILITY IS UNCALLED FOR!!  ;D ;D ;D

ALL are good calibers and have there following. I have them all but none in a handi anylonger. Personally of the three I like the Whelen far and away more then the other two.

You don't mention casting, so I guess you are all factory bullets ? In that case, I would certainly go 444. The power range is tremendous- from 44 special all the way up to well over 3000 foot pounds. Not every shot can or will be at game, so plinkers will be a must, and cast 44 slugs are much more available and cheaper than 50 cal or 35 cal jacketed.

Even more so if you don't reload at all. I think Whelans run $30 + or - a couple per box, and 500's way more. Std Rem 444's are low $20 range I think.

Twoshooter, I think you have been casting way too long! ;)   I have not been able to find the Hornady 444 under $30 and the Rem is closer to $35-$38 :o >:(   That is why I am casting and reloading  mine as well.  It's nice to be out of the loop with the cost of ammo ;D
