best Handi for coyotes?

I just played with the 38-55 'Hunter' yesterday and I dont think a 'yote out to 125ish would be safe; and that with the peep and bead, not scoped. Thats with a 100% cap. Trail Boss load and a 250ish gr. cast bullet (a REAL .38 cal., not those little pretender .357Max thingies  ).

I grew up with alot of wind so I favor the 25-06 at a min. (6mm in my case). If it is really windy, my .308. I also have alot of success calling them in and using a shotgun.

if you relaod.........still the 223 ....its just not soooooo far ahead  of the others


might consider relaoading stuff for your 308  instead of a new gun  for now

Funny you mention this... I took my 38/55 Cowboy out last trip to the range. My buddie two boys where back from college and I thought they might get a kick outta seeing it dosent take a AR to shoot long distances accurately and They did!!

Shooting my cast bullet of about 245g with 10g of Unique they quickly where able to shoot clay prig ions out to 250 yards!  Mine has a globe front and a Lyman tang site. They especially liked out shooting there father with my coaching and that "old" rifle. Good times for sure!!

It also wired my thoughts of selling it! I hadn't used it in years since stopping cowboy matches when another good friend passed away. I know remember why I wanted it and the fun times out shooting fellows with hi power rifles and big scopes!! I don't think I'll ever sell it now!

But for me, I'd load the 125gr Speer TNT and use my 30-06.

Usually not.  But most Coyotes I shoot are down in Texas, where they got mange, ticks, and are scroungy looking.  Most times you don't want to pick them up.

Here in Alaska we have Coyotes, but I don't see very many.  I see their sign, but not them.  The Wolves keep them thinned out.

I call most my yotes in TX also......they usually just get hung over a barb wire fence. I just built an 03A3 and haven't reloaded the 06 before.  Any powder suggestions under your bullet?

57 gn of Varget under a 110 gn Sierra HP with WIN brass and a WIN L/R primer.

This a good, flat-shooting 30-06 round for varmints.

I certainly understand wanting a new rifle. I am not a 1 rifle guy. I presently have 7 .224 caliber centerfire rifles and am in the middle of another .224 build. I have other rifles, but the .224 is by far the most popular in my house. Now with that said, if you are really concerned about cost, let me offer this up. Just how many coyotes do you plan on shooting a year? 25 maybe 50? 50 shots of a 308 will cost you about $1 a shot or $50.00. Premium 223 (BTW - an excellent coyote rifle)will cost about $.50 a shot. So you will save about $.50 a shot. Sounds good does it not? Now lets see, if you can buy a rifle for $250 it will take 10 years to break even at 50 coyotes a year ($25 savings). Longer if you do not shoot 50 a year (1 a week every week of the year). If you buy a scope for the new rifle, then you just added more cost, maybe $150 for the scope and mount and rings. Now you have added 6 more years to your break even point. Now we are talking 16 years for your break even point. Does not feel like such a good deal any more to me at least. But what the he**, who wants to be practical anyway? It is always fun to get a new rifle and the 223 is an excellent choice. I presently have an Handi Ultra varmint and a custom Savage build in .223. I hear ya on the waiting to start seeing the savings.  Seems like every time I turn around I see something I don't already have that it seems there is a legitimate need for or something that needs to gotten in larger quantity.    

Was at the kitchen sink this AM getting drink of water before heading to Baton Rouge for a seminar only to spot movement out in the front yard binos showed a pair of yotes working on head and hide of deer that was hit out on highway a couple of days ago judging by the decomp.  Managed to slip out with 77-22 and dropped one with a 22LR hollow point.  Will have to measure the distance tomorrow.

The OP requested the best Handi for yotes.  The 45-70 isn't even in the running.  It is a fine caliber, but yotes?  You ever called?  So I guess QDU was a documentary.

Regardless of how many I hit, I would definitely enjoy
an afternoon shooting at anything with a Sharps rifle
in 45-70 or 45-120.

What would you enjoy most?

My tool to control coyotes scavenging my cattle is the
22-250, so kills matter and this is my go to tool
for that job. Not fun like a day at the target range.

Usually just use a CZ Bolt in .22 Magnum.  Sometimes my .30-30 Handi with the 150 grain deer loads or just my Pardner with #4 Buck when in the thick stuff.  If I were to get a barrel just for Yotes here in Louisiana it would just be a .22 Hornet and find a good 45 grain bullet to use.  I don't care for the extra loud crack of the .223 when shooting close to houses.

And you suggest one of the worst calibers Handi carries for the job.  It is one of three Handi chambers that makes no sense what so ever.

OK, so you dont appreciate my sense of humor or philosophy, which ever way you prefer to look at at, but Im sure more than one here 'got it' and a bunch more didnt get excited. A fair bit of what gets said here is like a bunch of guys sittin' around a table or a fire and shootin' the breeze about stuff. I like it that way 'cause Ive tried living 'too tightly wound' and it wasnt all that nice for those around me, and, truth be told, it wasnt all that nice for me either.
