I WANT ANOTHER S&W
« on: October 23, 2012, 04:35:53 AM »
That said--I can't find one that melts my butter.
I am not talking collector guns here---shooters.
I have a fondness for "N" fames---I have no desire for a .44 mag--or anything larger than a a .41 mag-which I have.
I like the 586's a lot---and I have several. I have a K-22, .32, .45, several .357's and one converted to shoot 9x23.
I do like the Highway Patrol-M28-and have two----I think this is enough of these. WELL, maybe   ::) .
I am not into small snubbies--they hold no interest.
What do you have or want that may help me out.
Let's discuss this delima and see if you boys can help me out.
 :)
Blessings

I have a 6 inch 586 & a 4 inch 586 (conversion to 9x23).
2-M28's Hwy Patrol
M22-4, M19-3, M57-2, M19-3, K-22 & a M16-4 .32mag with a conversion to .327mag
A M625 in .45 LC would be nice but I am not sure that would not be very spendy---To get a 625 in .45ACP would duplicate M22-4 in that caliber (which I like) but having a number of .45ACP semi-autos, I am loaded up in that caliber.
I dunno, BUT the 686 is a thought just because it is stainless---that arguement sounds rather weak when I put it on paper though.

How about a K frame 38 special? Adj. sight model 14 or 15, or a fixed sight model 10 or 64 heavy barrel? Any would do as a rough and tumble fun gun, easy to pack and good for self defense too.
Not as heavy or thick as an L frame. Reasonable recoil, can be loaded with the same equipment that you have for loading 357 Mag.

There used to be a lot of them around when the local PD went to semi's, don't see them around a lot but they do show up now and then. Fixed sight versions under $400 used, adj sight usually that much plus.

 Something to mull over.
Hold still while I overthink this.

I don't believe I saw a .44 Special on the list you have now.  Fine old cartridge for the N frame - accurate, pleasant shooting, what's not to like!

How about something a little different - a S&W 52.  Very well made and accurate, shoots inexpensive 38 wadcutters, and did I mention accurate...

Nothing wrong with a 625.  The 45 Colt is a great cartridge but in the Smith you can't shoot a steady diet of Ruger Only Loads, but then, why would you want to?

You'll probably have to reload for that 45 Colt in order to afford to shoot it - but an ole timer like you I'm sure has a progressive reloader, so that shouldn't be a problem - If you're a single stage guy, well, just find a little more time.

A real nice load that I've found that puts 5 rounds under 2 inches consistently is 9.3 grains of VV N340 behind a 255 grain SWC.  Sometimes 5 rounds will group right at or under an inch at 25 yards rested but with irons and ole eyes there's usually one or more that "escapes" the tight group.

If you like the looks of a SW Model 25, you can always have it converted to a 45 Colt.  Here's what a converted model 25-2 looks like.

William;  Hello.  To me its the S&W older 38 specials.  The S&W Combat Masterpiece K38 with its 4" barrel is a nice piece.  The S&W K38 target Masterpiece is another nice piece too.  These are pre model 14's.  I really like the older S&W  & colt police revolvers. I'm even thinking the 38 S&W caliber too would be nice to have.
I'm older now and don't need 12" of flame out both sides of the cylinder and 18" of flame out the barrel anymore on the stout 44mags.  Sorry to say my younger wild days are long gone now. I still like the 44mag but its standard loads for me now.

PM’d ya back but for the others that might be interested.  I purchased this revolver used but did a little research on it, just to make sure I wasn’t paying too much.

I lettered the revolver and Roy Jinks advised my SW 25-2 started life as a 45 Target Model of 1955 with a 6.5” barrel in 45 ACP caliber and was shipped from the SW factory in October 1976.

The gentleman that purchased this revolver then sent it to Hamilton Bowen where the revolver received Bowen’s conversion package, which includes a lot of goodies and it started life over again as a 45 Colt with a 4” barrel.

Bowen also narrowed and smoothen both the hammer & trigger after which the hammer & trigger were case color harden, a lanyard ring was installed and the cylinder received a black powder chamfer.  I obtained a letter from Bowen Classic Arms Corp verifying the work completed on this revolver.

It's a keeper.

Well the reload speed of using clips , the recoil of a 357 with a 10 mm bullet. Its still 40 something. And it will shoot both 40 S&W and 10mm. And those two loads cover alot of ground . Probly fit some holsters you already have and same with grips.

I am just about ready to give up on this project. I can't find a 625 on the net.
The 610 does sound pretty good as a side-bar project but where is the project if you just buy a gun and shoot it without any fixin up?
I mean that is kinda like just buying a Les Bauer instead of a Norinco and haveing it stripped and rebuilt.
I do pick some screwy projects like the leupold I put on the Remington Speedmaster .22--- :P ::) :o ;D ;D ;D , NOW, that was screwy, but fun. ;D ;D ;D

Yes there are----all are 625's in .45acp.
That is a doable thing but not economically and I must have it within my means to do.
Bowen charges a lot---A LOT---for new cylinders---not so much to alter a cylinder.
Wish I had a lot of money--life in the fast lane would be a lot more simple.

I consider a 625 more useful in .45 ACP than .45 Colt. I don’t feel the N frame is sufficiently stout to take the heavy loads I am bound to try, compared to a Ruger NMBH or Redhawk. The N frame will take everything in .45 ACP or .45 AR that I am tempted to try. I actually use .45 AR most of the time, because I am just punching paper. I also have my .45 ACP cylinder for my NMBH trimmed to take .45 AR so I can use the same ammo in both guns.

The conversion entails a new barrel and cylinder both in .45Colt why not just buy a 25-5?

What about a refined Hiway patrolman, The Model 27 in either a 6" or the 8 3/8" model.
