Productive couple of days.
« on: October 09, 2012, 06:01:02 PM »
Started my calling season on Oct 1st and have managed 4 stands so far. I have called in 5 coyotes and got shots on 4 of them, killing 3.

I think this may be a good calling season, get out there and kill something boys!

Chupa, looks good to me, just glad I'm not a coyote in your area. Good luck and good shooting, take care, John.

No, no more the last couple of days. The last few days I have spent knocking on doors for more land access. Probably going to wait until after the next rain or for another cold front.

i won't be trying any until after
jan. end of season.
they're very call savvy and hard to
bring in range at my place.
i'm gonna start laying a few traps
if i can't pop a few.
if i see one if i'm in a stand while
deer hunting, it gets popped right
there. i won't pass on the chance.

i went last weekend to sit in my fav deer stand for a bit of scouting and popped two coyotes.the yote population is really on the increase here last few years.my dads cows were calving just about 500 yrds away so i was pretty proud.allthough to be honest ive never seen good evidence of a coyote killing any of our calves.

you're dang lucky.
i've seen 'em work on the neighbor's
cows. they seem to know when a cow
is fixing to domino, and if you don't
have 'em penned up close to the house,
or in a barn, the yotes will follow the cow
out in the bush and catch her when she's
calving. most times gets the cow too. the
meanest old cow is all but helpless.

i'd hate to have any of those wolves they're
re-populating up north. they're supposed to
be three times as bad.

i guess all those factors vary with the region,
kinda like the coloration i'd mentioned earlier.
around my place yotes are a lot darker, like
the dark saddled one in the photo, but darker.

There is a chance of rain this weekend, so ill be out scouting land for sure after the rain. Problem is that it's also supposed to be windy which will probably have them holed up. I need another cold front to come through.

Yes, 3" DC's
The choke is a Briley Extended Ported Turkey. Throws a pretty wicked pattern.

North Central Texas here also. Just north of Dallas. Those look like youngsters but their in good shape, so I think your right about this year. I've been callin since about 1969, but have slowed down a bunch. Is that call in the pic an open or closed reed call. It looks like a good one?

If you're talking about the cow horn howler? It's a NCK custom howler, and yes it's open reed.

My F-I-L has not lost any calves to yots either. He is N. of Dallas.  We get a lot of yots out here in W. TX by calling them in and using the shotgun.  Those do look like young yots.

with all the loose pets running amok
over the metroplex area, the yotes
don't have to mess with cattle, they
can snag a nice well fed poodle and
be done.
at my mom's house, some of the neighbors
put catfood outside and it draws the varmints.
i caught 13 possums year before last in
her backyard in a 3 week period.

took my mom the cemetery off of ih30
last year and saw 2 coyotes

The solo coyote and the dark saddled coyote were both YoY(Young of the Year) coyotes, the 3rd one was about 3 years old and very heavy for this time of year.

I haven't done any night hunting yet and have only used pup in distress this season, I suspect prey sounds will produce better at night. Good luck, put some fur down.
