Travel gun(s)
« on: October 05, 2012, 08:30:05 AM »
So on a daily basis and on long trips what would be worth while to pack ? Differen't parts of the country might cause differen't choices .
I like a handgun ,shotgun and rifle. Depending on where I go it can be all three or just one or two.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

A handgun within easy reach first and foremost. Depending on local laws a coyote rifle in a gunrack might be second. Third would be a shotgun in the trunk or behind the seat of your p/u. If traveling out of state you had better study well and thoroughly before carrying anything in your car. Most certainly unloaded, seperated from the ammo, in a commercial guncase, and seperated from the passenger compartment, would be a good starting point

Hand gun for personal protection, possibly a shotgun.  Still two warm for a good pelt from the "road lease", so no rifle.

As from my earlier post ... A Glock 17.  Also an H&R 45/410 Survivor with 25 rounds of 410 and 25 rounds of 45.  The case also has a container with about 250 grains of W231, 100 Large Pistol Primers, a 45 Colt Lee Loader, and 50 lead bullets (20 at 200 grain and 30 250 grain Keiths).  Case also has a leatherman and a nice hunting knife.  Also a firestarter.

I looked into travel a while back. What I found is federal law allows to to carry guns if legal where you leave from and where you end up. You need to have them as mentioned locked up away from people and seperate from ammo. States and local laws differ. Something to consider is your guns may be taken by police in an illegal act. They know it will cost more to get them back than replace them.
I have traveled around the East and Mid-West often towing a duck boat with no trouble . No handgun most of the time as we entered Canada and seldom a rifle .
I would say that in most cases you would have to do something to get checked. But it might be a traffic stop or such .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

My concern is now when you travel there is more chance of a 9/11 type crisis taking place .

Takedown rifles like the AR7 or the Papoose make a lot of sense.  Being dissassembled satisfies many state's requirements that you don't have a gun ready for use.  If you have time to get a rifle out, you have time to put it together.  It's not like a handgun that you keep loaded and on your person for no-time-to loose emergencies.
A nice 30-30 takedown would be a great option, though a bit pricey.  An AR type rifle could be carried broken down into top and bottom halves, but that would lose some of the Fudd acceptability or even run afoul of some state's AWBs, if that's a concearn.

I like a shotgun alot for travel. A 870 pump with a 28 inch bbl and some #8's for sporting clays ( yea I know its not the best choice of gun  ;) ) and a 18-20 inch bbl also and a old box for 8's filled with buck. The gun can travel broken down . With a rifle a good bolt gun with bolt removed would be nice to have.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

All these silly whatiff scenarios!

Has it occurred to anyone ...... ?

Would the plans and prepararions you make possibly be predicated on a .....

carefully scouted, studied and KNOWN route you might find yourself?

If the FITT hit the PROVERBIAL  SHANN?

Also, by being aware of what route you might travel and your preparations ......

Whould that help determine whether it was smart to leave home?  Or go to work?  travel?  etc.  (on a particualr day or time when the NEWS and society [in general] was tense and uptight?)

At least by knowing [intimately] where or how I might travel would help me know if a .22 or shotty was enough for defense, or where I might be ambushed ..... where cops or gandbangers might setup a roadbloack ......

My travel "plans" for a SHTF-times are fairly specific more than 95% of the time!
(just sayin'  ;)  )

My sidearm is also a 9 or .40.
Too bad Ruger discontinued their 10/22 magnum!

I like the suggestion someone made earlier about putting a 16in 10/22 on a folding Choate stock!

BTW, on Gunbroker.com I have bought (and seen others available since) 16inch replacement barrels for the 10/22 (with sights  ;)  ).

In Illinois your a felon if your carrying "even in your car" as far as a handgun. Shotgun your ok. Most of the time, I carry both and stay out of Illinois.

Good for you Dee.  Fortunate for me the furthest east I'll be going this next year (from woorsheengtun state) is Colorado.  ;D

But certainly not as fast east as Denver!  Where they've been known to sometimes pull that Illinois-snot (gun confescation from motorists!) on the I-25 corridor.

My SR9 stays empty in a drawer awaiting my annual qualification, except when I go away overnight.  Then I load it with the 10 round magazine and carry the 17 round magazine in my left pocket.

SHHH don't tell.
But a S&W 642 with a pocket holster lives in my car.
Along with 4 speed loaders and 5 loose CTGS.
I also have a Savage 520 pump shotgun that is cut down and comes apart into two equal parts, lives in an Army mechanics bag in the trunk along with a dozen buck shot and 3 slugs.  Also some water, a flash light, and hiking boots with good socks.
I live in earth quake country and at any time I can be stranded as freeways drop.  and the ability to walk home with what I have is a plus.  The scatter gun is a deterant and the pocket pistol is someting that can be hidden at any time depending on the need.

Wool blanket and a GPS with spare batteries and a high power flash light as well as a jacket.
But it is LA and even the cold days walking are still pretty warm.  But a Zippo and a can of fluid are always in the car.
I would like to add a Palm One bullet proof vest for both work and for a disaster.

SHOOTALL, I don't have quite that much stuff in my truck, but almost.  I think a major item that people don't take along is water.  Yesterday I was away from home and thirsty.  Retrieved one of my canteens and found the thing was frozen.  No drink for me.  I don't know how one might get around that problem unless he takes a fresh bottle each time he leaves home.  Keep it up front where the heater is.  I don't like to admit it, but in my younger days I loved to go in the wilds when it was really, really cold.  I liked the challegne of dressing for the adventure.  Anyway, I mixed by canteen water half and half with Chardonnay.  A dumb thing to go hunting with alcohol, but it didn't freeze.
