savage 340 not ugly any more

These guns have a reputation for being not pleasant on the eye. Got a boyds aftermarket black laminate stock. It comes unfinished just needed a couple coats tru oil i think it looks pleasant now

wow! very nice and good job! i have one just like it that i love.how much was the stock? and was there any prob fitting it?

it doesnt come with the round shaped cut outs for the plate where the clips go in. I used a fine toothed jigsaw blade and the just sanded it smooth. other than that its all done but the finishing. have a 325 butter knife handle model i am going to get the cin laminate for it. stocks are 74 dollars with the plastic but plate. i got them to include the rubber but pad for an extra 8 dollars. pleased as could be it now shoulder like a bolt gun with a scope should and the length of pull is rite. the original stocks were short probobly as most just used open sights.

thank you for the info! yu have a diff scope mount than mine. is it centered over the bore or slightly of to the side like my side mount?if it is centered over the bore, what mount is it?

A guy on ebay has them for 39 dollars. They are centerd over the barrel as you mentioned not off to the side like yhe weaver mounts.

hillbill have you had any success with any pointy spitzer bullets in this gun? the magazine limited my loading of the the 125 grain sierra pro hunter as I would have to load it deep and give up case capacity to seat it. dont want to go to 110 grain. the 160 ftx hornady fit and work well.

yes ive had good luck with 125 grn hornadys. is the sierra a copper core bullet which would make it longer for the same weight?the hornady 125 grn are a short bullet and if i remember correctly work fine in my 340.the 340 is the gun i developed the 125 grn load for.another fun load is the horn 100 grn short jacket with 4198 powder.its very nice for plinking and varmintsvery accurate also.

Well about 4 months from when i got her developed a load and started my work she is finished. I am happy as can be and hopefully she will give me and my kids another 60 years of use

Any chance I could you would post a pic of the other side of the rifle?  I bought what was supposed to be the same scope mount but I think the wrong one was in the pack.  When I line it up with the bolt holes the Weaver mount used,  this one is 3 degrees to the right of the bolt...

Thanx and it does look like the one I have.  The scope mount holes on my rifle a higher up meaning that if I use this mount, I'll have to cut down the side of the stock and have new holes drilled in the receiver. 

I wonder what the B-Square mount looks like...  Anyway it's looking like putting iron sights on it might be easier.

The old factory stocks do have to be frilled out to make the sight fit. The boyds stocks have a drop to them which enables access to the holes without any modification.

I'll have to check into the cost of having the new holes D&T'ed...  I can do the stock work myself.
