BAR .270 Winchester loads?
« on: October 03, 2012, 10:07:26 AM »
I'm seriously considering handloading for my Belgium BAR .270, and mostly interested in heavy bullets, i.e 15-160. I've never loaded for a BAR before, and while I don't intend to hot-rod it, I do want all I can get (velocity with good accuracy) Can I use the slower powders in a BAR, i.e. H4831 or slower? Will I need a hard primer or can I use my CCI BR2 primers?
I don't want any sticky extractions, of course, just wondering how well the BAR extracts warm loads? I loaded for a Remington 742 years ago that was a nightmare, ha. I had very good results loading for a Remington 750 Whelen, hoping this BAR will be as good. Thanks for any help.

I loaded for a BAR in the 70's.  It was a 7mag.  RCBS made die set just for BAR then.  Expect it was a small base full length sizing die.
No problem with primers or powders.  I was new to reloading then and pushed everything to the hot side.  Don't recommend that for semi auto rifles now.  I have a 1967 model 742 in 30-06 that works great with small base dies and frequent case trimming.
Good luck.

Finally gathered up some RCBS SB dies and some Hornady 150gr IB to try. I did get to the range to shoot some factory loads for zero, trial. The Remington 100gr shot into 1" to 1.25" so zeroed for it. I can shoot coyotes with this load. I then tried some Federal 110 TTSX loads that went into a bonafide .6! wow!. The Winchester 150 XP3 loads didn't fare too well, about 2.5", which is "minute of cow elk, but I know the rifle is capable of better. Of course, I'm sure I can kill a cow elk with a heart/lung shot using the 110 TTSx, but I like a little more weight for them.
I'm really just looking for a heavy bullet load it will like. Not sure yet if I will start with H4350 or H4831SC...any comments?

I settled on 56gr H4831SC over CCI BR2 primers and the Hornady 150IB. Super accurate and excellent functioning of the BAR...gotta love a Belgium BAR! I don't know if I really needed the SB dies, but they sure do work swell.

RevJim,

I've owned a lot of different BLRs as well as BARs and especially with the Belgium guns I'd say there is at least a 50% chance you will need the small base dies.  ;) you probably saved yourself some headaches by just starting with them.
