Sealant for my wooden AK stock
« on: October 03, 2012, 09:16:42 AM »
Just bought an AK.  I have the original wooden stock.  I was going to protect the wood with some kind of sealant, what do you guys recommend?

Thanks

Depends on the look you want.  Some wood paste wax will work if reapplied every so often, or you can use tru oil, which will seal the wood, but will give it a shine.  Some linseed oil and beeswax mix will also work.

Okay, what kind of oil are you talking about for sealing the gun and how often would you really need to apply it? Also, if you mix some linseed or beeswax would prevent the gun from bright shine.?

About everything I use today has a plastic stock because I figured out a long time ago the stocks don't mind as much to hold back briars as I do getting tangled up in them. But I used to put birchwood casey tru oil on wood stocks. It was a pain in the butt. Put a coat on by hand, then steel wool after dry, then another coat and so on and so forth until it had a hard thick coat and the wood quit soaking it in. I see now that they have an aerosol can. I like the clear coat idea better. You could just spray however many coats without the steel wool in between. Can't speak for a clear coat but my 4 main hunting guns are camo with paint and hold up well. Briars don't ever scratch the paint.I think they were done with rust oleum.
