Coal company facing aggressive regulations announces 1,200 layoffs  Published: 4:57 PM 09/18/2012    By Michael Bastasch  Archive | Email Michael Bastasch   Get Michael Bastasch Feed         inShare0                    Coal company Alpha Natural Resources announced Tuesday it would be laying off 1,200 workers and closing eight coal mines to face two new challenges: cheap natural gas and “a regulatory environment that’s aggressively aimed at constraining the use of coal.”
The Associated Press reports that the company is cutting production by 16 million tons and 1,200 jobs nationwide, with 400 layoffs occurring immediately by closing coal mines in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Four mines will be closed in West Virginia, another three will be closed in Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. All the mines are non-union operations, according to the AP.
In total, nearly one-tenth of the company’s 13,000-person workforce will be laid off.
Republicans jumped on this announcement, criticizing President Obama’s so-called “war on coal” as they work to pass bills aimed at ending new regulations.

The Stop the War on Coal Act of 2012 contains a bundle of provisions which the House has already passed, including one provision which prohibits the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gas emissions and another restricts planned EPA rules regarding coal ash disposal and management.

“President Obama’s War on Coal means fewer jobs and higher energy costs for Americans. Coal is a critical component to our nation’s energy future, and I am proud to support this legislation that will help preserve this vital energy source for future generations,” said Kansas Republican Rep. Mike Pompeo, one of the leading critics of President Obama’s coal policies, talking about the Stop the War on Coal Act.

All Part of the Presidents plan to weaken the economy.
1 Class Warfare that hurts the poor the most
2) increase all costs he even said he needed to raise fuel prices to get us off Oil and other fossil fuels
3) having made union workers that actually believe that the Democrats are for them and use them as pawns to grow government programs.  Democrats are on the side of the green movement and are against Mining, Logging, energy production in refining or electric plants that are not wind or solar, manufacturing and trucking.
If the union members do not wake up and realize the democrats are not for you then we are done.
Americans can make it better, cleaner, more efficient than any of the forgien countries.  Look at the polution comming from China as well as the Slave labor.

some of my favorite fishing was in old strip-mines up in ILL,  logging has been proven to benefit all wildlife except maybe squirrels.
smoke-stack emissions are very clean now, so it's very plain that husseins agenda is to control every facet of our lives.

We could easily have cleaner air by using natural gas for vehicle fuel instead of electricity production.  Use the coal for electricity production and allow new nuke plants to be built.  Use coal for synthetic diesel.  Using natural gas to replace some gasoline, and making synthetic diesel from coal would eliminate oil imports.  Green energy isn't yet cost effective, it will be in time.  We used coal for about 100 years for steam engines for locomotives and factory steam power.  We switched to oil based about 100 years ago.  Both took a while to change to the other.  It will take time now.  Green energy will eventually cost less than fossil fuels, but it will take another 50-100 years.  This is just pure economics.  The government by trying to FORCE the change hurts us all.

It doesn't matter much anyway, because once our federal DEBT reaches 20 trillion our government is bankrupt.  What will happen, who knows, but we will either have to not have welfare, food stamps, foreign aid, the military, no Obamacare, and maybe even social security will not be paid, OR we will have hyperinflation which will also cause widespread panic, OR a combination of both.

What to do?
Get out of debt.  Try to obtain some land or live in a small town.  Grow your own food and chickens, goats, or a milk cow.  Stockpile food, ammo, toiletry item, medicines.  Get in good health, exercise, loose weight.  I know all can't be done.  Some people who are on meds are skipping one or two days a week to stockpile meds.  Try to use firewood for heat/water heat/cooking or, solar heat/water heat/cooking, solar electricity for refrigeration.  Either use well water or have a means of water purification.  After all that, buy gold/silver/copper.  Learn bartering skills such as carpentry, welding, farming (specialties like herbs, medicinal plants, spices), tanning and leatherworking, making cordage from plants, woodworking, plumbing, electricity, taking care of draft animals and other farm animals.   Many of you guys can get Pell grants right now and go to a trade or community college to learn some of these skills which will be needed in a bartering society.

Everything you need to do is covered here on Graybeard and there are a lot of other ways, librarys, books, and the internet.

Ya have to give Obama credit for being upfront about what his intentions were.  He's getting it done--high energy prices, eliminating coal and such.  Now the question is whether the unemployed miners will vote conservative, or vote for the commies in hope of getting a government check.

Therein is the problem.  The Soviet Union went bankrupt trying to keep up with us.  (Spending more than they could get in taxes).  We are headed the same route.  If Obama is reelected, by the end of his second term we will be bankrupt with hyperinflation, and massive government cuts.  Just kicking the can down the road.  Romney could delay this maybe 10 years or so by putting on the brakes and getting the private economy actually back to working.  If we start having hyperinflation, the foreigners who own our debt will start cashing in before it gets out of hand.  This will only make things worse.  If the private economy is stimulated, people will get off unemployment, welfare, and food stamps, and go to work and pay taxes.  Thus the government takes in more taxes and spends less on welfare, unemployment and food stamps.  Win win for the private economy to be stimulates.  How do we get the private economy stimulated?  Well get off private industry's back, allow drilling, pipeline construction, back off on coal restrictions.  Lower taxes on manufacturing to get some of those jobs back.  Lowering taxes on the rich should be pegged to no taxes on money spent to hire more people and for expenses associated with manufacturing or costs for equipment to operate a service industry.  The should be able to keep profits if they spend it on job creation and productivity.

Why didn't some of that "green" stimulus money go toward developing new "green" ways to utilize this vast natural resource we (the U.S.A.) possesses?
Only answer that makes sense to me, is the film "2016"... he actually wants to wreck us...and send more of our $$$ to the muslim countries..same reason he fights the Keystone pipeline.
Could it be he WANTS us dependent upon the Arab oil?

Liberal, Socialist and Communist all have a negitive sentament in the US.so the marketing people came up with Progressive.
If ytou understand that a progressive is one that progresses the communist/ Socialist doctrine then you understand the progressive ideas.
Progress is a subjective term and unfortunatly everyone thinks is moving forward wit full employment, lower cleaner energy, good schools and safe neighborhoods.  But that is not what the progressives are professing.  They want radical change from a capitalist system to a demand system where they know what products are best for you.

That's about the size of it ! and the rich can just leave the USA and all its problems when they wish. Hope those who vote commie think about where the hand outs will come from when the rich leave.

Right on mcwooduck;
The term "progressive" is a recent invention to put a smoke screen in front of liberal, communist, Marxist..
They are simply elitist "control freaks" who think they know better how to run our lives than we do.
By the evidence shown by  John Edwards, Bill Clinton, Elliot Spitzer or the Kennedys..they can't run their own lives very well.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpajEJdX6jM

What exactly is the point in stopping coal use ? What cost effective alternative is there that can be used in the same plants with little modification ? The coal burnning plants have cleaned up alot .

when govt. makes production and use cost more with no more benifit in an effort to push production of less cost effective sources it has an effect. Often loss production can't resume at the same cost later since trained personal have left the industry and equipment scrapped to save on taxes etc.

In the eastern US, there is not enough wind to maintain windmills to be cost effective, only in the plains states.  In the east also, coal is abundant and was and still is used for power production.  Clean air EPA mandates with stack filters costing like $100,000 each and have to be changed weekly, make coal burning expensive.  Natural gas costs about twice what coal cost in bulk, yet that is what the power companies are going to so they can get out of these mandates.  Thus, most power bills in the eastern US have gone up about 12% a year the last few years.

Now, windmills actually cost about the same as a natural gas generator for the same amount of power produced, but the plains states are sparsely populated compared to the east so they do use windmills.  Problem is transmission, power can't be transmitted but a couple hundred miles because of the loss of power in the resistance in the wires.  So getting the power from the plains states east, and west, requires large scale power transmission lines and they are expensive to build and install.

Natural gas generating plants can be installed from start to finish in less than 2 years.  It takes about 10-20 years for a nuke plant to be approved and built.

I work in the natural gas industry.  My take, using it to produce power is not cost effective.  2/3" of the energy in natural gas is lost in the energy transfer to mechanical to electrical and transmitting to your house.  Running a pipeline from well to your house or to a natural gas filling station is 80% efficient.  Not a good use of natural gas.

I say use coal until more nuke plants can be built.  Use natural gas for vehicle fuel, especially fleets like utility trucks, garbage trucks, UPS delivery trucks, postal delivery trucks, school buses, city buses, etc.  This would cut 40% of our imported oil.  Once the infrastructure is in place, vehicles could then be sold to individuals.  In the meantime, money spent on solar panels, which went bankrupt and are now made in China, could have been spent on coal gasification plants to make synthetic diesel and gasoline, further eliminated foreign oil.  That allong with drilling our own could withing 5-10 years get us completely off foreign oil and all that money would stay home providing jobs here.

We have an estimated 800 year supply of coal, a 200 year supply of natural gas, and a 200 year supply of oil on government land and offshore, not being drilled or used.

Solar and wind will come along with nuclear, when these supplies are eventually used up and become more expensive.

Obama has several things wrong with his socialist thinking.  He thinks there is only a set limit of wealth.  He thinks when you get a $1 an hour raise, someone somewere else is getting a cut in pay.  He doesn't realise the pie can grow, and it can grow by allowing the use of abundant cheap energy along with more jobs.  His father was communist, he studied under communist mentors.  There is NO UTOPIA, never will be.  Even Jesus said the poor will always be with you.  Obama also thinks green energy is the answer, because of "global warming".  One volcanic eruption puts out more CO2 and ash that all the industry in the entire world in one year.

Right now, pie in the sky ain't helping, we need jobs, we need people OFF the government dole working paying taxes.  Our traditional fuels have served us well, and will continue to do so for at least another 100 years IF the government gets off the backs of Americans and lets us work.

once the liberal communists take over, miners will go back to the mines, which will be government controlled, like general motors.
there will be no more corporations in the new USA.  college will be free for engineers, scientists and doctors.  the rest of you will work on government farms.
look at the old USSR and you will see the new USA.

back on topic, after the take-over, coal will once again generate our electricity.

They go after the coal mining and the coal power plants with air quaility issues and the amount of sulphur in the air.
They fine the power plans at extreme rates.
Remember the big power problem in Southenr California a few years ago where texas was selling CA power at 2 and three times the normal rate?  It was all due to the out of control EPA air quality boards and their huge fines.  A power plant broke.  And one that was down for almost reaching the allowable polution was brought back on line.  The power companies wanted to trade the credits from the broken plant to the other plant and was told no.  The fines were up to $10,000 an hour and it was worth it to buy power from texas at 2 and even 3 times the standard rate as it was cheaper then the fine by the AQMD.  The AQMD people are apointed by state AQMD boards that are apointed by the EPA that are apointed by the elected officials.
In San Francisco the AQMD was handing out $3,000 for open containers of varnish, the one in the guys hand as he was finishing cabinets inder the VOC rules, driving the cabinet makers out of business.
While Natural gas is not cheaper per calorie than coal it is cheaper than the fines and converting the plants are not hard.
We have the Ventura air polution board talking about having people change their boiler from 20 Parts Per Million to 12 causing many business to spend thousands on new equipment to try to clean up less than one hundredth of a percent (0.0001%) of the air polution.
Oh and the AQMD boards make their own rules, write their own fines and if you want to appeal you appeal to them.
So they write the laws, enfore the laws and adjudicate the laws.  Can you say karagroo court.

Wyoming coal is anthracite coal which is far cleaner than easter US coal, bituminous.  That is why the approval of Wyoming coal.  Giving the Republican state of Wyoming jobs (3 electoral votes) vs eastern coal in Kentucky, West Virginia, Alabama, which are also Republican and have more eletoral votes and Obama wishes to hurt these states more.  He is all politics and idealism.

Wyoming is all bituminous or sub bituminous. Anthracite is found in PA. You may want to revise your conspiracy theory.  ;)

Coal is king here in Campell County, WY.  WE just build a new power plant which sets the standard  for clean coal!
http://www.poweringthewest.org/tag/dry-fork-station/

A third of the coal burned in America comes from Campell County.

Clean coal, that's the goal!
