In keeping with thread topic... I don't think revenge is going to get us much good, especially if directed against adherents to a religion, rather than perpetrators of crime.
There comes a point where the motive of the crime (in this case religion) needs to be examined, and as has been done in history, condemned as well as the crime.
Consider the Thuggee religion, or any one of a number of cannibalistic, tortourous, or those whose rites involve human sacrifice, that were categorically rejected ... not merely scorned with a simple "no one says you have to believe the way do. Can't we all just get along." It took a systematic focus of stamping Thugee out, or at least down into obscurity, to allow peaceful folks to exists without fear.
I am waiting to hear the outrage from the Clerics at Al Azhar, the sacred seminary in Cairo, against the violence, or any other legitimate Islamic religious governing body. The silence is deafening, and I am left conclude silence equals support.
If a group of Christians were to act the same, there would be a hue and cry from other Christians condemning such acts as the work of extremists. If not, we'd be forced to suppose it was merely an extension of the faith.
