Yeah tell me about it. I desperately need one on my .44 magnum if I'm gonna shoot other than .44 Specials in it. I do fine with my .357 and OK with the .45 Colt cuz I don't load it very warm.

I need rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders and the pain level has now reached the point I guess I'll have to give in and get it done. Those curved metal butts and my tender shoulder don't mix well.

I have a leather cover that I've trial fitted and it looks like it will fit the .44 magnum and I'm hoping it solves the problem. I don't recall who made the one I have but he was thinking of going in the business of selling them and I got mine to let him sell them here for awhile but he never did. One of our members was the go between and he and I both got one.

I have considered have a gunsmith cut the curve our of the butt and install a Pachmayr decellerator pad. To make it look decent and keep the lenth proper the top of that metal plate would need to be left in place. If you can stand the extra length (I can't) you could use a slip on recoil pad.

You'll have to decide if this is right for you, but I bought a leather sleeve for mine and used sorbothane gel padding cut from a shoe pad.  I used two thicknesses, and this is about right for my heavy 45 Colt loads.http://www.kirkpatrickleather.com/accessories/holster/rifle-butt-cover-52  Mine fit perfectly on my Octagonal Rossi 92.

Sorbothane shoe pad cut in the shape of the buttstock does definitely help.  Use two or three as needed. (thickness wise)

That's kinda like what I have except it is flat on the butt rather than contoured for the curved plate like yours. Mine also has loops for holding several cartridges. The one I have was actually made for the H&R Buffalo Classic but I think it's gonna work. The one you have should work even better.

As often as we see this question, its a wonder there isn't a proper fit on pad for this problem.

The limbsaver slip on pad is what I use, it's the only way I can shoot the 44 mag. after busting up my shoulder on a motorcycle.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

Doug, I did the more expensive route.  I ordered a butt stock for the 480/454 rifle to put on my 44 mag.  Few years ago, think it was around $70 shipped then, they come with a recoil pad and mine fit right on.  DP
