I've been wanting a .22 for a while now but when your 15 and haveeno job and just bought an 06 your money dissapears really fast. Anyway I am looking at buying a good accurate 22 for around 150 dollars. I want a bolt action or semi-auto.

A Marlin model 981T might be in your price range, the Ruger 10-22 semi sure is. I mention the 981 because it is a tube magazine which IMHO looks a heck of lot better.

I'll have to 2nd the Ruger 10/22. I don't normally care for Ruger products, but there are a couple I would not hesitate to put in my rack. The 10/22 is one of them. Not only is it a well built and reliable .22, but there is no other rifle out there with the availability of accessories to choose from.......

If you want to go real cheap on money but not quality and have a super accurate 22 and have some dough left over for a scope find a Romanian 69. Some of the big chain sporting goods stores like Big 5 and Gander Mountain had them and others might as well mine will shoot half inch groups at 50 yards all day long with ammo it likes and the bores on them are great they are machined well in the bores were it counts for accuracy. The scope rail is not the same size as the american ones but you can get rings to fit and or adapt rings. A great gun for the money and you should be able to pick them up for under 80 bucks. they are a 5 shot repeater bolt action. Jim

Been there myself when I was 15. Take a look at a CZ bolt action. Excellent quality and are good shooters.

The new savage autos and bolts are excellent for the money, they are also extremely accurate. The 10/22 no doubt is a very reliable auto and has a slew of after market parts so it can change as you do. Depending on what you want for acurassy, it is sufficient as a plinker or hunting rifle, it's not a bench rifle though. I have about $500 in mine for accuracy it shoots .75" groups at 100 yards the mark II savage heavy barrel will do that stock. Seems like my ruger was about a 3" shooter at 100 yards stock, more than adequate for a squirrel rifle.

I would look at the used rifle market. Check the local shops, gun shows, and internet auction sights. Look for a 69-69a, 72-72a winchester. The remington m37, 34,33, and the new 580-581-582 series rifles are also excellant choices. The Winchester 69's are really great rifles. They consistantly shoot great and a nice one can usually be found in the $150-200 neighborhood. The 72 is nearly the same rifle but uses a tube magazine rather than the detachable box mag of the 69 series. For some reason the 72's don't seem to bring as much money as the 69's although they most generally shoot as well. An added benefit is that all the rifles mention are made of blued steel and walnut..

all the above choices sound good.but on an almost non existant budget,I would look at the romanians.Aorund here they go on sale at aroun $49.00.The next time they do,I will own four of em.

10/22 rugers are probable the most popular rimfire ever made, and for good reason, they work well. I really like my CZ bolt action I have an Ultra Lux version which is more like $200 but you can get an American model for less. This rifle will put every round in a 1/4" at 50yrds if I do my part.

Glad to see some one else knows the value of these fine rifles!! :grin: I agree I have one but When I ever find another one cheap I will pick it up just to have a spare. Super accurate guns for the money. Jim

I have never shot a CZ but they are fine looking rifles. As a side issue here my Romanian 69 shoots darn near as good at 50. Just might be some old world craftmanship involved here. Jim

Hello- JH & whitecloud hit it on the head... the Romanian M69 has to be the BEST deal going right now! They're a good rifle at a fair price. A simple, reliable shooter with no plasic parts to break. Give 'em a serious look & you won't be disappointed! Keep spreading the word guys!

Let's look now....you said you have about $150 for a good, accurate, dependable rifle...
I humbly suggest the Marlin 25N:

1. Good...for the price, they are good, American made rifles.

2. Accurate...Rare indeed is the Marlin that is not accurate.

2. Dependability...a proven bolt action.

Also the bolt may save you $$ over the auto in ammo costs!

I presume the savage 93 is about the same, but I don't own one.
Savages also have a reputation for good accuracy!

Unlike some older, used models, the Marlin and savage are already grooved ,if you may wish to mount a scope in the future.

If you can afford a bit more, spring for the CZ., but remember, only certain scope mounts work well.

On the other hand, the CZs have some terriffic "iron" sights!

Whitecloud, JH45Gun and Snobird know what they are talking about. The M69 will give you performance that will equal rifles costing 4-5 times as much. Much talk about these on ParallaX Bills forum. I have never see anyone complain about their accuracy with these little rifles. It's still a mystery to me as to why they remain so cheap. I've had two for over a year , both are great shooters, and I've had no mechanical problems with either of them. Glen

The 10/22 is a great gun for all the above post reasons. A gun that most of us started out with, and many still have there first, is the Marlin 60 another auto loader with a tube feed.They are cheap enough you will have money left over for a 22 scope. They are accurate enough for plinking and hunting. I have taken many a squirrel with mine, some out to 50yards.

I well rember being in your spot.My first 22 was a glenfield[read marlin]60. They were $29. at K mart.$30 bucks was a lot of lawn mowing back then.There was about 7 million of them made.Theres a lot of used guns out there , check pawn shops,gun stores, etc.you should be able to get a used one for around $25 to $50 bucks. I also have a romainian bolt gun and can say that they shoot .Good luck and happy hunting.

Marlin, savage, and Cz are my pics. I like a bolt 22 but before you get one think about getting a 22 mag! More range and power if you need it and if you don't, then shoot solid points. I have a Marlin 882 ssv which is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. I also like CZ but never shot one, and I like the savage that my friend bought and is the most accurate 22 mag out of the box that I have ever shot! It might out shoot my Marlin.
I like a 22 but like my Mag better and the 17 hmr is a nice round to. Ammo is getting cheaper and more people are making it. For foxes and smaller game, I would get the .17 over a 22. If you want to hunt alittle bigger game, Get the 22 mag. If you can wait? Put some money back and get what you really want instead of buying something just to buy it! I recommend the .17 or 22 mag, Good luck!!

I agree with gunnut69. I'd attend a few gunshows and handle as many different rifles as you can and find one that "fits". Get a quality used 22 and I think you'll be happy in the long run.
