44 mag smoked cases
« on: August 28, 2012, 03:26:38 PM »
There was one more 44 mag question I had.  I shot about 70 rounds the other day out of my 44 mag Talo barrel.  All were either Remington green box 180 grain, or Winchester white box 240 grain.  Every case came out of the chamber considerably smoked up.   I know it can be a sign of low pressures, but I doubt that is the case here.  I have owned a number of 44 mag rifles and pistols over the years and dont recall the issue being this bad.

Has anyone else had this happen?  Is it normal?

Chamber diameter a tad big maybe?

Sounds like the chamber is a bit oversize.  If you reload, no problem, as you can leave the cases as fired without full length sizing.  Just neck size to hold the bullet well.  If you don't reload and this is a new or complete gun, you may want to contact H&R....

I have noticed the same thing with  my Talo Trapper .357. Mine still does it after I reamed it to .357 max. I am using a near max load of H110 under the Hornady 180 gr. SSP, and every case comes out smoked up.

A lot of my .44 mags do it as well. Nothing to worry about.

+1

I've had three Ruger Blackhawk revolvers, one Super Redhawk, and one NEF .44 Mag, all have smoked the cases to one degree or another.  I neck size only and use slightly oversized cast bullets to get away from smoked cases.
keep em talkin' while I reload

My Ruger Bisley smokes the cases when I load with unique (plinkers) but not when loaded with my standard (semi-hot) H110 loads.  Doesn't hurt anything, tumble them and reload them.
