which barrel

I just today bought a new Handi Rifle in 30 30. Tomorrow I want to send the reciever and get a 223 barrel for it. My question is about the 24 inch bull barrel, will the extra weight be too muzzle heavy? Would the rifle be a little better balanced with the standard contour 22 inch barrel? Anyone know if both barrels are now 1 in 9? Thanks

I had a .17HMR bull barrel.  It was fine off the bench or in the truck, but, to me, it was terrible to lug around.  Too heavy and it only slung fairly comfortably muzzle down.  Got rid of it.  As far as twist goes, I imagine now they're all 1 in 9, but I'd confirm that with H&R.  I guess it's possible they could still have 1 in 12s in inventory.

I don't think there have been any 1:12" barrels made for about 5yrs(2007) when H&R said they were switching to 1:9", this info is in the FAQs.  ;)

Most bulls are muzzle heavy, regardless of make or model. If you want easy & balanced carry you need medium weight and fairly short.

OK thanks guys for the quick replies. I think I will go with the standard contour 22 inch barrel. I think it will do everything I need it to do and be a little lighter and better balanced for carry. I have kind of wanted one of these for long time and today while in Walmart happened to look at the gun counter there it was marked down to 239 dollars. It has a large scratch on the right side of the pistol grip but I thought it was a bargain. Again thanks for the quick replies.

Scotsman, I'm new to the Handis, just bought my first one last week. .223 with a 24" bull barrel. I was surprised at how well it balanced for me. I held a few of the other Handis the dealer had just to get a feel of what barrel length felt better. I gotta say, for me anyways, that 24 bbl feels real nice. Maybe it has as much to do with my size as the barrel, 6'2" 220lb, but I really like the feel of it.

My .223 heavy barrel is the only heavy barrel that is still full length... the others have been cut down to 18 or 20"... but shooting heavier bullets through the full length tube has really helped with accuracy... I like the extra weight, especially when shooting offhand and as far as carry goes, it gets slung muzzle down.

I've got the standard contour 22" barrel and it is perfect!  Not too heavy, just right.  After having this one, I wouldn't want anything any heavier unless I only shot at the bench all the time.  You can upgrade your stock also if you wish.  Enjoy that gun, 30-30's are wonderful Handi's!  44 Man

Hoyt, you guys get as much snow as we do.....200 inches in a normal winter.....not so much lately.  Doesn't the muzzle drag in it?

Thanks 44 Man I am sure I will enjoy it, I really like the 30 30 cartridge, I have two levers I wouldn't part with. Just my preference but I would never put a scope on a lever rifle. I am going to put a decent 4x scope on the 30 30 I think it will be a ton of fun. I have several hundred of the Speer 130 grain flat nose bullets hopefully I can find a load it will like using those.

Yes, Scotsman!  Definate scope that 30-30 and you will be amazed what that Handi can do!  Mine has shot 1/2" at 100 yds with both the Sierra 125 PH's and Hornady's 130 gr bullet, both with a max book load of H4895.  Go to Hodgdon's 30-30 load data on their website and give it a try.  Remember to read the FAQ's and then head for the range.  You're going to have fun!  44 Man

I've got a 24"bull barrel, and to me it is poorly balanced (too muzzle heavy, and front bag has to sit under the forearm instead of the hinge pin as the FAQ's recommend).  In fact, I'm on the verge of cutting my barrel down.  Now, I have to say that I have a light plastic survivor butt stock, and it might be better balanced with a heavier laminated butt stock.  What kind of stock are you looking at?

Unfortuneately, how it will feel to you is not something any of us can answer. Some do find them muzzle heavy. A larger scope can help to better balance them.

I have had all three 223 barrels... I never found the 24" or 22" barrels to be uncomfortably muzzle heavy. Generally speaking, I prefer the bull barrel. But the way it shot determined what I wanted... The 22" Bull ended up as my best shooter. BUT I don't feel the OAL of the barrel has much of anything to how well it shot.
