Po Boy Custom....
« on: August 26, 2012, 09:42:53 AM »
This started out as a $89 H&R 12 gauge. It was scarred up and abused as a truck gun.

I decided to send it to Remington for a new rifle barrel.

The shotgun uses the SB1 frame and H&R will only chamber the SB1 in the .357 Mag and .44 Rem Mag.

It now has a 22" .357 Mag. I refinished the hardwood stock with a satin spar varnish. Applied a flip-flop recoil pad and its ready to go. After deer season I'm going to handream it out to .357 Maximum.

Looks very nice ;D When you ream to Max go ahead and bob the barrel to 16+ inches. The max and the 357 will still develop all it will get in 16" and it is a joy to carry ;D

chrome, nice work there. Made that one look better than new and gave it the personal touch. Let us know how the ream to Maxi goes and naturally how it shoots, Take care, John.
It's not what you do, but how you do what you do, that counts.

My fiance and I each have Maxi's and they're great. I cut her's down to 18" and put a set of youth wood stocks on it to fit her better. Mine has a WGRS rear sight and Remington front ramp with gold bead... hers is getting the same treatment but with a fiber optic front sight. The greatest thing about the 357's is the versatility of them. Plinking with the 38's or dropping deer with the Magnum's. Doc is right too... don't be in too much of a hurry to Max it... the Magnum can really walk the walk when it's loaded right. ;)  You've done a great job on the refinish and turned out a really nice rifle that you should be proud of. If you plan on reloading for it you'd do well to get yourself some H110 and some Hornaday XTP's. I shoot 110gr. and 158gr. XTP's and both are very accurate. I've also had real good luck with Remington 125gr. soft points over H110. You've got a pretty good scope on it too with that Redfield... I've got 2 of them and they're solid and dependable. All things considered you've got a great gun for everything from small game to medium game like deer and black bear with the Magnum. If you do bump it up to Maxi you can really tangle with some sizeable critters and not be undergunned. ;)  Best of luck with your new beauty and let us know how it shoots.

Thanks for the compliments. The rifle has a long free-bore. The 158 Hornday XTP can be seated out much longer than standard specs.

I suppose all the .357 mag barrels have the long free bore ?

Hodgdon's LilGun can make the 357 mag. sing a faster tune.  I don't normally suggest going past top load levels, but have used one with the 158gr SP's Rem., or 158 gr XTP FP's that is one grain over max.  Got the load from an article written by Brian Pierce in either Handloader or Rifle mag., and he loaded higher than I went.  Hodgdon's top load for the 158's using LilGun is under 26,000 cup, top load for H-110 or Win 296 is over 40,000 CUP.  I use the same load in levers, revolvers and single shots, brass life is excellent, still going strong after 10 reloads on some used for testing.  ANYONE USING LOADS ABOVE MAX LISTED IN RELOADING BOOKS, DOES SO AT THEIR OWN RISK!!!!  DP
