Need some advice about scoping a 30-30
« on: August 25, 2012, 03:21:29 PM »
I have my dad's pre-64 Marlin 30-30 which had been tapped for a scope about 40 years ago. It had a Redfield wideangle 4x on it, but the glass has turned yellow and Redfield won't cover anything that was put out before their last buyout.

As I've gotten older I have kind of gotten an itch to hunt with it again but need to scope it. I like the features of a 4x, but don't see much out there. Any ideas? Maybe would consider a 1x5 or such but would like something over 28mm.

I have a Simmons 1.5-5 X 20 on my model 36 that works very nicely for me. It is called a shotgun scope, but the Marlin doesn't seem to care.

I've shot the same 3030 for 54 years, and although it's not scoped, I would recommend a Leopold in 2 to 7 power.

I couldn't agree with Dee more.
A Leupold Vari-X II, in 2x7 is what you want.  Light, compact, I think its a 32 mm or 34 mm.  They go great on lever guns.

Or a new Redfield 2-7X33, seems to be the same to me as the Leupold VX-1 and has the same life time warranty.  Nikon Prostaff, same power, is about the same price range as the Redfield and good glass also.  Another in the same price range, or some less, would be the Weaver 2-7 or straight 4 power if you want to stick with fixed, four power.  DP

I agree it is a good hunting scope no matter the gun hanging under it !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I don't know about the Leopold, I use Bushnell Banner Dawn to Dusk 1.5-4.5x on my Winchester AE Big Bores in 444 and do not have any problems at all with the scope.

You guys know Leupold still makes fixed power riflescope, and while the Leupold 2-7 is a fine scope, you can buy a Leupold straight 4x if thats what you want. It's just that a lot of optics companies don't carry the fixed power scopes anymore.  ;) So they are harder to find..

My Marli 336 mounts a Weaver 3X scope in weaver mounts. It's all I need in Pennsylvania.

I've had good luck with Bushnell 1.5X - 4.5X scope on my rifles.  It's sturdy with bright & clear optics.

You can find this scope on eBay for less than $75.
