Questions about rebarreled H & R
« on: August 25, 2012, 12:53:59 PM »
I decided to get into the Handi Rifle game and started looking around.  I finally purchased a rifle chambered in 22-250 AI that has been rebarreled by a gunsmith named Paul Day (anybody ever heard of him?) after seeing it shoot three consecutive five shot groups of .487, .455 and .512 at a hundred yards.  I was quite impressed and it blew me away that this little break open could shoot like that.
The way it was rebarreled was unusual to me because the original barrel stub is still there and a fluted stainless barrel was pressed or threaded into it.
This rifle has a H&R survivor synthetic stock set and the trigger breaks crisp and clean, better than others I had looked at.
I am thinking I would like to send it in to have additional barrles fit to it.
My question is pretty simple: What is the approximate value of this rifle?  Hopefully I didn't pay too much.

Look thru the H&R Classifieds, lots of stubbed barrels sold there, I sold a 6.5x55 Shilen stubbed barrel for $275 IIRC. Frames cost about $100, the stock set $50 or so.

I paid $325, thought I was getting a good deal.  Seems like it wasn't too bad.

If it's holes in the right place you want and it does it, you got a steal.
As to putting other barrels on, dont mess with a good thing!
Many of us who went that route have pretty much gone to dedicated platforms.

apparently it came with a scope? or did you get it seperated?  still a good deal for a guaranteed shooter.   enjoy.

I bought it without the scope, base only.  Right now it has a 3-9X40 Burris on it until I can find something I like better.  The only issue I have is that it takes pretty high rings to clear the hammer and that doesn't give me a good fit on the stock.  Thinking about looking for a laminated stock with a cheekpiece to replace the Survivor stock on it now.

My H&R Ultra Hunter/Varmint MC is fine with the scope height I have (old Weaver), the rear bell clears the hammer tip a comfortable tad. Higher ring/base combinations would likely not be right for my face. I dislike high rings; that tad above the hammer is always my key for fit as I dont want to 'chin' a stock, but 'cheek' it.
There are some 'stick on' cheekpads available that might work on your stock, too
