22mag to k hornet twist rate
« on: August 17, 2012, 03:04:54 PM »
I got my 22mag barrel to fit sb2 with a shim.  Now my question is I have a 1 in 14 twist 22mag barrel.  I know the list says 1 n 16. but I checked it a couple times.  ss1 made in 96 I think, 22''bull.  will this make a good barrel to ream to hornet and shoot 35gr vmax bullets? Or should I just buy a hornet barrel? thanks  sandy

I don't know about the 35 gr vmax. My k hornet does good with a 30 gr speer tnt and 1680 powder in a 1-16. They used to make a black tip 30 gr v-max along with the red tip 35 if you needed a smaller v-max. Guessing they still make them.

I am not sure what material the barrel is made out of. If it is 4140 then you are good to go. I think some NEF (H&R) rim fire barrels had a little softer steel - not sure about that. Even if they are, the 22K hornet is not that hot (high pressure) and should not be that hard on the barrel.

MidSouth has a 34 grain hollow point that works real well with my 1-14" twist 22K Hornet. I suspect it would work well with 1 - 16" twist as well. Another point is the MidSouth bullet is about as cheap as you can get. They are $41.67/500, a bargin in today's world. MidSouth used to be a sponsor of this site, I am not sure if they still are or not, but they do have a quality bullet for not a lot of money.

Modern H&R centerfire rifle barrels are 4140, rimfire and shotgun including the 45-410 are 1137, stainless are 400 series. Stimpy has a couple centerfire conversions done on rimfire barrels, he'd be one to ask about barrel life(throat erosion), there are couple 17 Rem owners here, maybe they'll chime in.

The 1:16 is about maxed out in bullet length with the 45gr. Hornet bullet, though a few 50ish have reportedly done OK if they were high steppers. It is often hard to get enough extra velocity and stay within pressure constraints to stabilize an otherwise too long for twist projectile. The 1:14 wont have any trouble stabilizing a lighter bullet.
The barrel steel issue may be moot, as most of us wont shoot enough rounds to actually shoot out the bore. Yes, it has been done, especially in the old days with quite soft 22RF barrels rechambered to CF, but I dont know of anyone lately reporting to have really done so (I havent heard everything though, maybe check online for such).

well got barrel reamed out friday but needed some cases to finish headspace.  looked all over and found a box of remingtons 45gr hornet 53.00 dollars.  no thanks.  my cousin gave me some to use. so saturday we finished the chamber, and glued on scopebase.  let is set overnite and loaded up some cases to try.  two to sight in. then a 3 shot group at 105yds.  under 1 and 1/2inch.  12gr lil gun and a 35gr vmax  running 2800fps.  not bad for fire forming.  tried some 53gr hpbt match at 2700fps plus didnt do as good as 35's  So I got home and there was a big fat chuck.  Too bad for her.  100yds off hand and man did that 35vmax do its job.  Dont have to worry bout richocets.  bigges part left was the red plastic tip.   Think the k hornet is going to rock and roll.  lookin foward to getting it on paper with a good load.    Thanks Tim.  will have reamer in mail monday when PO opens should go out tomoro...   sandy
