Anyone ever see a rabid groundhog?
« on: July 12, 2012, 06:05:34 AM »
How do they act? I just had to kill an aggressive little one that was stumbling around it charged my dog and then turn to charge me. I shot at it with my CCW but missed. By the time I recovered for a follow up the little nasty was just about at my feet I didnt want to risk shooting myself in the foot so I had to resort to clubbing it. I guess I need to start training to deal with advancing targets that are the size of poodles. No one was bitten so the local health department isnt interested in testing the carcass. I found a video on youtube where one was acting similar to the one I killed and they claim it was distempered.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Ground hogs see people as predators generally, and having one attack is a good sign that something is wrong with it. It may not be rabies, but probably something similar.

We have confirmed bear sightings, and a handful of people who claim there is a black panther on the loose and now we have surly groundhogs. Me? I am most concerned about the groundhogs!

Groundhogs normally are not rabies carriers, but they have been know to have rabies. Never had a groundhog charge me, they will turn to attack a dog if they feel threatened enough. My guess is that there was something wrong with it. Good thing it wasn't a pitbull or griz after you.  ;D
I remember a guy my parents told me about who was a trapper. He nicked himself with a knife while skinning a fox. He later died from the rabies virus. I trapped also when I was a teenager, and nicked myself while skinning a coon. Never thought nothing about it and threw the carcass in a manure spreader. Later my mom asked me how I got cut, I told her, and she made me go dig the coon carcass out of the manure spreader. We sent the head to be tested for rabies, but the test was negative. So if anyone ever even gets blood on them that could enter a skin opening, its a good idea to take the animals head and get it tested for rabies.
