help me get rid of yotes please!
« on: July 04, 2012, 06:37:24 AM »
Last year i got on a deer lease in Miss.  I brought my wife on her first hunt late in the year. As it was getting dark and we were coming off stand, the coyotes started going crazy all around us. It was so bad and so close that I had to get my wife off of her stand and walk her in.
I want to get rid of em on the cheap and not hurt our chances of scaring off the deer.  What can I do to call em in (Ive never done this before)?  Im in a heavily wooded area with shooting lanes cut in a circle around the stand, the only sighting I had last year was a passing glance when one crossed a lane.. Help!

Sometimes, Its better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool then open it and remove all doubt.

Commercial mouth calls are cheap, as little as $10.   Enclosed reed calls are easier to learn to use well than open reed, but not as versatile as them.   If the ranges you would shoot them at are only out to bout 225 yards, a 17HMR shooting CCI TNT's will get it done reliably and fairly quietly.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Good luck on your efforts.  You really need to call/hunt/shoot those puppies all year long, as they multiply pretty fast if they have sufficient food in the area.  If you’ve never used a call before, I’d recommend an electronic call, as there’s no learning curve to the device, just a learning curve as to how to properly use the caller.

Coyotes are really difficult to harvest in wooded areas, as you don’t usually see them approaching the call, as they all of a sudden appear and most of the time from a direction that you have to make some adjustment for to get into a shooting position and they just might bust your movement and vanish – all part of the game.

I’m very confident that coyotes won’t attack you or your spouse but their barks can be a little stressful to some but just think of it as Nature’s evening noise and enjoy your evening/hunt.  Your chances of trimming the packs down to size are slim to none by shooting them and only poison will do a good job of that but trapping full time can put a pretty good dent in their population.

Yotes   get   educated   quick    to   calling   ,  I  would   locate   a   local   trapper   . For   lowering   the   population  quickly.

snares are prob the best way to get rid of them.they will need to be checked daily and you will have to have a pretty good knowledge of the coyotes habits and travel areas.calling early in the fall will get a bunch of the young of the year pups and some older yotes till they figure out what is going on.leg hold traps are good but again yu will need experience with them to consistantly catch.i have tons of yotes on my land and also tons of deer. i dont see them causeing a prob with the deer population but im sure they may in some areas.if you see a coyote during deer season just shoot it, i do it all the time and a deer may show up 15 min later.

Get yourself a Primos lil'dog call pack, it's the best commercially made hand call I have tried and still have the green mouth piece on my lanyard, the rest are customs. Find a turkey feather and attach it to a dowl rod by a length of monofilament, let it flop in the wind and it makes for a good cheap decoy which will allow a little more movement on your part. If in timber, a shotgun and 4Buck is your best bet. Pup in distress is the hot sounds right now.

landowner near me said best (illegal) method is to hang some large treble hooks with poisoned hot dogs about four feet off the ground.

sounds pretty rough, but he said it works. No legal, and will kill other critters who eat hotdogs.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

If you don't have time to call them in, I'd say finding a local trapper would be the best way to thin out the pack legally.  You can also check local regulations - some allow coyote hunting over bait.  A little offering of road kill or scraps from your deer hunt can make a compelling lure for coyotes, especially when used in tandem with calling.  I even like to take a rabbit squealer with me when I go deer hunting.  If things look hopeless, Ill start doing a little calling to see if anyone is nearby.  Its also useful for those times when you get in your stand and see a coyote or two run by.  It usually only takes a squeak or two to get them to stop and look around.  Coyotes generally don't have a chance to get wise if you get 'em shot before they run off.

Ck your local regs first.  I like to go our at night and call.  I use a red light and a 12ga.  Just be careful, and watch for non-target animals.  I've had Lynx, Fox, Wolves, Cows, and curious Deer all come in.  The reason for the red light.  Here in Alaska I often get Moose and Bears as well as Coyotes.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

These bad boys work very well, if you can keep people & dogs off your land while you use them.

If you can prove livestock predation, you can get a special permit for a short period
of time, which requires special posting of the land plus neighbor advanced notification.
