Two teens killed after early morning police chase        by Brittany Gonzalez WHAS11.com Posted on June 23, 2012 at 5:19 PM
Updated yesterday at 12:01 AM        Gallery  See all 8 photos »  (WHAS 11) – Hwy 146 West in the 4300 block in Buckner re-opened Saturday night after two young teens died in an early morning crash.

According to Oldham County police, officers attempted to stop a vehicle driving without its head lights turned on at West Jefferson and Dawkins Road around 3:18 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle did not stop and continued on at a high rate of speed.

According to police, the chase lasted more than 3 miles. The driver, 15 year-old Michael Tanner Wheat, crashed into a parked car and then hit a utility pole.

Joshua Henry lives across the street from where the crash happened. He says a loud bang woke him.

" The car was laying on top of a telephone pole that it had snapped. But the car that it hit was a four door vehicle that was crunched up small enough that all that was left pretty much was the hood," said Henry.

Henry said when he looked out the window he saw a body in the road.

"She had no kind of movement," said Henry.

According to friends, the passenger, Autumn Marie Foree, 14, was Wheat's girlfriend. She was transported to University Hospital and was later pronounced dead around 9 a.m.

Foree's neighbor and classmate, Rachel Baines, described Foree as someone who always spoke her mind.

" She was great. She always had a smile on her face," said Baines.

Foree just graduated from Oldham County Middle School.

The accident and cause of death are still under investigation.

Hwy 146 West in the 4300 block in Buckner re-opened around 9 p.m Saturday. It was closed in both directions while workers repaired the utility poles.

Anyone with information regarding this accident is asked to call the Oldham County Police at (502) 222-1300.

I really do not understand some kids these days. My guess is they had no fear of being punished. Think most childeren now days have the same mind set. I can show you a few that do !. At the same time, they never sneak out and take a car for a ride. ;)

Mom speaks out about her 15-year-old son's fatal crash        by Johnny Archer WHAS11.com Posted on June 24, 2012 at 7:27 PM
Updated today at 7:41 PM        Related:
(WHAS11) -- It was a tragic ending for 15-year-old Michael Tanner Wheat, who was soon to be a sophomore at Henry County High School  and his 14-year-old sweetheart, Autumn Foree, who was going into her freshman year at Oldham County High.

“[They were] two very good kids that just wanted to be together,” said Connie Smith, the mother of Wheat. “We've tagged them as the modern day Romeo and Juliet. But I guess that ended being the final of their fairy tale.”

The teens died in a car crash early Saturday morning on Highway 146 in Oldham County.

“This is probably the biggest fear that I’ve had to face,” said Smith. “I have three boys.”

Smith lost her middle son, because police say Wheat led officers on a high speed chase, after they tried to pull him over for not having his headlights on at night.  Foree was in the passenger seat.

“It’s undetermined why they were out at 3:00a.m.,” said Officer Sarah King, with the Oldham County Police Department.

“I think he panicked,” said Smith. “He had been in a lot of trouble for sneaking out already and I don’t think he wanted to answer to me or anybody else or get her [Foree] in trouble as well.”

Police say the chase lasted about three miles. They say Wheat was driving so fast, he lost control, hit a parked car and slammed into a telephone poll snapping it into pieces. Neither teen had a drivers license.

“All of a sudden I heard the loudest bang that I ever heard in my entire life,” said Joshua Henry, who lives near the crash.

Police say Wheat was wearing his seat belt, but died at the scene. Foree was thrown from the car and later died at University Hospital.

According to Wheat’s mom, her son was staying over a friend’s house for the night and used their car to pick up Foree.

“To know your child is supposed to be at one place and the police at your door are saying you no longer have them, that was the biggest fear that I had to confront yesterday,” said Smith.
Police say they did not find evidence in the car that drugs or alcohol was a factor. But, it will take several weeks to get an official toxicology report.
Police also will be able to determine exactly how fast Wheat was driving after a reconstruction report in complete by Tuesday.

Just further evidence to support my thoughts that high speed chases like that should not be allowed unless they know a dangerous felon is in the vehicle and might escape and even then if the roads are crowded I don't believe they should do it.

With pretty much all cop cars having dash cams they should have been able to get the tag number and go to the house it was registered at with no danger to anyone.

GB. I agree but the mom wasn't blameless either. Sounds like she let her underaged son take her car to pick up his 14 yr old GF. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Each and every time a useless chase is started
many,many Innocent lives are risked
There is no reason to put the public at risk
I believe I read 8% are for dangerous criminals
that leaves 92% that are minor infractions
Proves police need guide lines ASAP

Years ago a co. cop flew through a small town here at well over 100 mph. He killed a dog and narrowly missed kids with it. His emergency?? And I questioned him on this and pointed out the stupidity of his act. He was responding to a call of a threatened suicide where the man was not endangering anybody but himself.
In all fairness about the OP the kid driving without lights WAS a threat to others who might have been on the road. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

I agree with you on long highspeed chases, I believe it said this one was 3 miles??I can amost spit that far, in a high speed chase 3 miles goes by pretty quick.
Lets keep the blame were it needs to be. Very tragic loss of young lives, but they were the ones that made the choice to flee. They were trying to avoid a little trouble and paid the ultimate price.
The kid was driving with his lights off! What if he was let go and had plowed into a minivan with a family in it, then what? Where were the COPS? They saw them, why didnt they stop them?? The poor dad didnt see the other car because the lights were off.
Lets look at it realisticly and not point fingers!! It could have ended bad even if the police were not involved.
Did the kid have a D.L? Did he know how to drive? Did he know how to turn the lights on? Whos car was it? stolen or borrowed from a family member?
I agree it depends on the seriousness of the crime and the threat it poses to the general public. For me if the kid had his lights on it would be a whole new ball game, then get the tag and catch them later. Driving with lights out at any speed is highly dangerous and is a threat to all others on the road.

My two daughters had better not be out with some boy at that time of the day. At 15 years did he even have a license to drive?

When people find out they can run away & the police won't chase them, they will run away every time. Will we be encouraging people to run? If I call from my cell phone, while I'm running, and report my car stolen they cannot charge me with any offence.
