Author Topic: Remington quality and service (Read 977 times)

I bought my sona 597 late last year and had some jamming and feeding problems from day one. After very detailed cleaning it functioned a little better but still jams and will even feed a round on occasion without cocking the hammer. Yesterday I call Reington and they tell me to take it to their authorized service center. So I make the 45 min drive and the gunsmith there tells me he has had little luck with the 597 and will probably have top send it to Remington. When I ask how long he tells me to expect months for them to turn it around. What is the deal with Remington quality and service? If this is the service, it will be the last Remington I own. You don't buy a gun for your kid so it can sit at the factory for months waiting for them to pull their heads out. :evil:

Remington make some fine rifles - However, the 597 is not one of them.

While I love my 870 and own a old Rollingblock rebarrreled to 45/70 I am not a big fan of Remington for some the the BS they pull. Their bolt action centerfires are good but I would not pay for what they are asking for their new 22 bolt action on a bet! Their 22 ammo sucks way to many duds and misfires and their 597 as you found out are not no bargain either as they have had functioning problems. Their semi auto centerfire the older ones had receiver problems with cracking and after they came out with the 7400 model said too bad if your gun breaks we have no more parts buy a 7400 instead with no compensation for you old one either.

I got rid of my 06 after that while it still worked and I could still sell it. I do not think their customer service is up to par for sure. They could take a lesson from Henry as far a great customer service goes. Seems to me they are a big company that does not care about their customers as good as they should. Jim

I also bought a 597 for my son. It looked good and felt good at the store, but is a miserable POS. I tried the fixes posted in the forums but could never get it to be dependable. It sits at the very back of the safe.

I have thought about taping the bore and installing a bolt, filling the barrel with blackpowder, burying it and firing it remotely to see how big a hole it will make. :wink:

Remington Rifles anymore are so much junk. Pretty yes but looks don't mean anything if it doesn't shoot or work right. Only thing worse is their Customer Service Department. It may as well be a Black Hole. Your complaints go in and nothing comes back out. Lawdog

After calling Remington, I finally got he gun back. They simply replaced the trigger group assembly - 6 weeks. I took it out with my son to shoot and it no longer holds the bolt open like it should on the last shot. Nice job. Made it through 2 mags full and on the third it stovepiped on me.

Remington service has been a huge disappointment. What a bunch of idiots. I guess am the biggest one though for buying one of their guns.

Fixing a problem with a 597(or whatever) isn't the answer. Getting Remington to fix their quality control and Customer Service is the answer. Twenty, thirty years ago Remington was at the top of their field BUT they let things slip away and now they have a problem. I believe they need to shake up the CEO or replace him and other members of their Board of Directors. Maybe some new blood on the board would get them back to where they were. Small groups and tight lines to you. Lawdog

Looking through the forums over there - looks like the first thing to do is run a brick of the hottest ammo available through the 597 and try to loosen it up. I picked up a few boxes of stingers to try. Normal high velocity (Fedral and Remington) don't work well. After that - looks like going to aftermarket hammers etc. One would think these would function correct from the box and especially after being serviced under warranty.

Lawdog, I agree that ANY product should be free from any flaws from the factory. I thought that perhaps a "simple fix" at home might save someone from the time, expense and aggravation of having to ship a firearm back to the factory. The thing is, I'm not here to crusade against Remington either. Remington is not alone with this QC problem. I just saw a NIB Sako 75 that wouldn't chamber factory ammo. It's been sent back to the factory for over a month. Also, a new S$W 686 that had an oblong muzzle crown. These are just a few examples of current firearms goof ups that I've personally seen. It's pretty apparent that ALL of these manufacturers had better get their acts together, not just Remington. MI VHNTR

I had a brand new 700 BDL in 7MM-08 that the first shot we couldn't get the bolt to come back. Working with it for a while we got it open and found the chamber was badly burred and the shell expanded into the burr. I took it to a dealer we didn't buy the gun from, and he sent it back to Remington. I had the gun back in 10 days. The quality problem shouldn't have happened, but the turn around was acceptable. This was a couple of years ago, so things may have changed. I hope not.

Wish I would have read your post before buying a used like new 597 stainless with synthetic stock. What a worthless, jamming, piece of junk. Never got through a single 10 round magazine without a malfunction. Tried several types of ammo. More malfunctions. Bought one of the new metal magazines. Same story... The only break I got was when my gunsmith took it off my hands as a "project gun" for the same $$$ I had in it. He is one who likes challenges. Bless his heart, he has definatley bought into one.
I've learned my lesson and intend to stick with Ruger 10-22s. I presently own three and have been through several others. All of them have be utterly reliable so long as I used factory magazines.
