I have my 223 handi grip filled as full as it can get with #7 lead shot. Used it last year for PD hunting and just left the lead shot in. I have seen no ill affects. Not sure of the weight, but I am not walking around with this rifle. It is a straight up bench rifle.

Tom, Why don't you just make a lead stock for it? :o ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D   I tried 36 oz. of #6 in a sock in my .45-70 for a while.  Took it out.  Prefer the recoil to the weight.

Pete,

I was thinking of using spent Uranium instead as it is more dense than lead and has the added benefit of making a nice hand warmer for cold weather hunting. ::)

I am working on a little bench rest project with a heavy recoiling Handi and am too cheap to buy a lead sled.   I agree with you and would never have the lead in a stock for hunting but if you want to shoot a lot from the bench sometimes the repetitive thumping gets a bit much.   I have a synthetic stock and the lead shot just thought maybe somebody had already weighed one full of lead.  I will fill mine up and see if it adds weight over a Laminate M/C stock with the bolt channel full of #6 shot.

I would think that it would hold a couple pounds of lead at least.  I wanted to lighten one of my guns and I swapped from a heavy scope to a light one and a lamanated stock to a synthetic.  I took a pound and a half off the gun.  Good luck with it.  44 Man

I use sand. A full load of shot would really throw the rifle out of balance  IMO anyway.

FWIW, I added ~4lbs of #9 shot to an Encore PH t-hole stock for the 375 H&H project, just poured it in loose until full, the stock cavity is similar in size to a Handi.

4 pounds would help!  Right now the gun is about 10 pounds and I am shooting a 279 grain bullet @ >2,700 fps.  Going to modify the gun to a heavier stock and add a bipod in my quest to break 3,000 FPS.   Also switching to prone shooting as the recoil is more manageable from the position.  I could just shoot the rifle offhand as the recoil isn't bad at all but I kinda like my chrony and I am sure it would die before I reach my goal. :o

Most of my loads are pretty soft to keep the shooting fun.  For hunting, I';ll verify the sights with a couple of full loads and then go hunting.  In the woods you never feel the recoil anyway, but when I am just shooting to enjoy shooting; I keep the enjoyment level up and the loads down.  Just my way of doing things.  44 Man
