Lyman 200 gr gas checked (358315) in the Maximum

If so, what was your experience? Thinking of it for a moderate range (50-75 yard) deer load.

I haven't seen a pic of that bullet but it should work fine, as long as it has a nice size flat on the nose nose to cut a hole in the soft places and break bones in the hard places.  A bullet like that at 1600 to 1800 fps will work fine on deer.  Or you can always use the old Rem 200 gr round nose jacketed bullet, that works great also but I'd perfer that pushed to 1900 or 2000 fps.  My old .short barreled 35 rem levergun only pushes that bullet to 1900, but it just hammers what it connects with.  44 Man

I have that mold, it is a round nose configuration.  Not good for hunting, you need a better meplat for hunting use.  It is also handicapped by being long for the weight, caused by the long tapered nose.  It dsoesn't seem to stabilize in the bore very well.  I have never been able to get that one or the 358318 to shoot worth a hoot in a max, or a 35 whelen of any flavor, and I've shot it in 3 different handi rifles, a Remington bolt gun, and a CVA Scout.  A friend has a custom 358318 clone with a hollow point, he has had better luck with it, but not by much.  Try it, it may work for you, but I would not bet on it.  My best performance with the maxie is with a custom 360190 RNFP with a gas check that I purchased on a group buy on cast boolits web site.  My max works best with the fattest bullets that will chamber, your results may be different.  Good luck.

i am goin to try some NEI 360-185s but loading data for a maxi rifle is non existent! I know i can use a powder charge for the same weight bullet, but what about seating depth? I am not limited to revolver length, but how deep a bullet is seated affects pressures. Where do i look for information?

I checked a couple .358" cast bullets for fit in my Maxi, Mt Baldy 200gr FNGC and 240gr LFNGC, they're into the lands at ~2.200", fine for the 240gr, but not much in the case for the 200gr, less than .200".

To get the bullet to the lands, just drop a bullet into the chamber, take the trusty set of calipers, and check depth from the breech end of the barrel to the base of the bullet.  Write this number down!  Take your trusty cleaning rod and bump the bullet back out of the chamber.  Take the calipers, check the length of the bullet.  Write this number down!  Then add the two numbers together, that is the overall length of the cartridge.  Cast generally works best just touching the rifling, or maybe engraved just a bit on the nose.  Jacketed usually works best off the lands a bit.  Since the handi doesn't have a mag to feed from, you can use this method and fit the cartridges to your rifle.  You don't have to worry about a published number in a manual.  One caution, if the length is significant amount shorter than published data, you need to start low on charge weights and watch for pressure signs, because the powder space is reduced by bullet intrusion into the case.

I havent seen this bullet, but have strongly considered the RCBS .35 200G

http://www.amazon.com/RCBS-Bullet-Mould-35-200-FN-565/dp/B0063I61WE/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1339681733&sr=1-1-catcorr

I have some and they shoot very well form both my Maxis and my 356!
