Which guns would you choose?
« on: February 02, 2004, 08:27:21 PM »
Hypothetical question:

Assume that you don't have any guns and a rich uncle asks you to choose  your 5 handguns for your hunting needs.  He will pick up the tab so money is not an issue.

1.  Which guns would you pick? What caliber and why?

My choice:

1.  The Automag pistol in .44 AMP caliber, 6" bbl because it resembles the Ruger MKII GC.

2.  The Ruger MKII GC678 in .22 LR, my all times favorite.

3.  Colt Python .357 Mag stailess steel, 6" bbl.

4.  S&W 629, 5" bbl, .44 Mag for all around gun.

5.  Sig 210, 9mmP

So what is your choice?

I am not going to cheat and say, "An Encore with 17 barrels for my first gun..."
I am a revolver man,

1. S&W 617
2. S&W 686
3  S&W 657
4. Freedom Arms .454 Casull
5. T/C Encore 209x50 muzzleloader

I think this list pretty much covers all hunting, except for the handful of xx-large animals in Africa, which could be covered with a custom bbl for the encore (6th "gun")
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

Freedom Arms 97 in .45 colt for a belt gun
Colt SAA in .45 just for fun
Kimber custom .45
Ruger bearcat .22

Of course then I would still have to buy

Ruger SS .32 mag
Ruger SSS .22
Charter .44 spl
Kahr Covert
Colt New Frontier .44 spl

Oh, yeh almost forgot the TC in .223 and .375 JDJ

Which guns?

Well, since Unc is footing the bill I'd take the following.

A Colt Match Target 2nd generation .22LR for informal target shooting

A Freedom Arms M97 in .41Magnum with 5.5 inch barrel for open carry on the homestead and to hunt with

A Freedom Arms Premier with octagonal  6 inch barrel in .475Linebaugh with a .480Ruger extra cylinder for BIG game.

An Ed Brown Cobra for CCW and schools.

A Reeder "Ultimate .41" in .410GNR with an extra 5 shot cylinder for .41Magnum for hunting and all around shooting fun.

These would do until Unc had to dole out for Christmas and birthday presents!

Why Uncle, thank you.  Here's what I would like......

A S&W Mountain Gun in 44 magnum
The same in 357
A Ruger Gov't Model 22lr
A Springfield 45 with interchangeable bbls in 400 Cor-Bon (my version though) and 9x23/38 Super, and
a long barrelled Luger in 7.65mm with shoulder stock.............

Ya'll can have some fun with those methinks but, that's just my 2 cents worth.  Mikey here.

1.  Ruger MK II stainless slab side .22 long rifle.  This one handles about 95% of small game needs and extremely accurate with a scope.
2.  Ruger Single six convertable, 5 1/2 inch barrel.  Has a bit more power than the slab side and can shoot shot shell for snakes. Easy to carry and shoots everything for CB caps to rim fire mag.
3.  Coonan .357, stainless, auto loader, very accurate, flat and easy to carry. handles all .357 loads and can be adjusted to shoot .38's.  Good sights.  Reloads faster than a revolver and can handle very heavy hunting loads.
4.  Ruger Super blackhawk Hunter. .44 mag.  Using a 2X scope with right loads will handle about anything in North American.
5.  Contender 7-30 waters with appropriate scope.  When hand loads are used can be used from small game up through deer.  Shoots a bit flatter than a .44 mag

S&W Mountaingun in .357, and .44
S&W model 63 4" barrel
S&W model 629 6" scoped
Thompson Encore in 7mm-08, 12" barrel
That would be my wish list.

Uncle Festus, I'm not a greedy person so I'll just request a S&W 44 model 629 and a S&W model 686.  Oh, and for my hated groundhogs a Ruger single six would be fine.  If I have to, I'll take one of those 17 HMR handguns too.  Thanks

If money was no object:

1. S&W 617 .22
2. FA83 .44 mag
3. FA83 .44 mag
4. FA83 .44 mag
5. FA83 .44 mag

If I had to pay for them myself:

1. S&W 617 .22
2. Ruger Bisley .44 mag
3. Ruger Bisley .44 mag
4. Ruger Bisley .44 mag
5. Ruger Bisley .44 mag

Personally, I can hunt anything on this this planet that I desire to hunt with either a .22 or a .44.

5 Handguns?
« Reply #14 on: February 15, 2004, 10:49:21 AM »
I would pick...

Ruger MKII678G...

Any high quality .44MAG DA Revolver...

Those 2 will take any game in North America.

The other 3 would just be "I just want them" weapons and would not serve hunting needs.

Wilson Combat CQB... w/tactical light rail, speed chute, green Armor-Tuff finish.

FNH 5-7... Just because you probably don't have one.

Walther PPK/S... (older version before S&W ruined them) replacement for one sold years ago. They were works of art.

After looking at the choices that people made so far,  my conclussion is that the Ruger MK II, the Fredom Arms Revolvers, the Ruger and S&W revolvers were the ones that most would have prefered.  This reassures me that the guns that I already have are the ones that the majority of handgunners do seek.  By making the "rich Uncle" to pay for them, was an attempt to go for the dream gun and don't worry about the price kind of deal.  I thought that I would see some exotic names in the list.  But it was plain simple.  People love the usual guns and the trusty ones and they don't have to cost an arm and a leg.  Definitely, the Fredom Arms revolvers were amongst the finest and expensiver of the list.

1.   Ruger ss 45 Bisley - perfect balance and capable cartridge
 2.   Competitor chambered in .357 maximum w/  14" or 16" bbl - long range
 3.   Ruger 22/45 w/ 8" bbl - good balance and great accuracy
 4.   Freedom Arms .22 - great accuracy and classic lines
 5.  Ruger ss 41 Bisley - (see #1)

  * of course since I already own #1, #3 and "close enuffs" to #'s 4 and 5, I guess the Competitor is soon to appear.  Perhaps.

No matter how hard I try, I just can't come up with five...

I'd have to have a stainless 5.5" Single-Six (plinking, and small game)

Then a stainless 32 magnum Single-Six (groundhogs, predators, and such)

Then a stainless 357 Blackhawk cut to 5.5" (only thing I need for deer, and smaller stuff)

Then, If I ever planned on hunting in big bear country, I might consider something like a 5.5" 45 Colt in a Blackhawk (stainless of course).
